Born in 1971, Middleton grew up in Cornwall and was educated at Truro School, where a family environment full of instruments led him to classical training on piano and cello. It was in Cornwall, around 1989, that he met a teenage Richard D. James, later known worldwide as Aphex Twin. The two were close enough in the early 1990s that Middleton, recording as Schizophrenia, co-produced "En-Trance to Exit" for James's Analogue Bubblebath EP, released on Mighty Force in 1991, one of the formative records of the Cornwall-to-Rephlex pipeline that helped define early UK electronica.

Global Communication and the Pritchard Partnership

Middleton's most consequential relationship, though, was with fellow producer Mark Pritchard, whom he began working with in the early 1990s under a run of joint aliases, including Reload, Chameleon, Secret Ingredients, Link & E621 and, with Matthew Herbert and Mark Darby, Fog City. Global Communication became the most celebrated of these projects. Released on Dedicated Records on June 1, 1994, 76:14 (its title taken from its exact running time) built a full album out of slow-morphing pads, field-recorded texture and almost no drums, and it has stayed in print and in critical conversation ever since, including a 30th-anniversary vinyl reissue. Middleton and Pritchard also recorded as Jedi Knights, a considerably more upbeat, electro-funk and house-leaning project, and the pair reactivated the Global Communication name for live shows in 2012.

Away from Pritchard, Middleton built a solo career that moved through several distinct scenes. As Cosmos, he worked in a more club-facing, melodic trance style, signing to Island Blue in 1999 before moving to Polydor in 2002, and he compiled the multi-disc mix set "The Sound of the Cosmos" for Hooj Choons. He also ran his own label operation, founding Evolution Records in the early 1990s, later restructured as Universal Language Productions with the sub-labels Heard and E3. By the mid-2000s Middleton had become closely associated with the UK's downtempo and chillout scene, compiling the mix albums "The Trip" (2004) and "The Trip II" (2008) alongside a run of solo albums, "Lifetracks" (2007), "Glasstracks" (2011) and "Sleep Better" (2018), the last of which pointed directly at the direction his career would take next.
