DJ Koze is the rare dance producer whose records get reviewed as pop albums, whose remixes turn up on other people's best-of lists and whose own label is a one-man quality guarantee. The German producer, born Stefan Kozalla, came up through hip-hop battles and a Hamburg rap crew, then spent two decades bending house, ambient, soul and sample-based collage into a sound that belongs to nobody else. In April 2025 he released Music Can Hear Us, his first solo album since 2018, and in 2026 he followed it with the Spiralen EP on Pampa Records.

Early life: Flensburg, battles and Hamburg

Kozalla was born in 1972 in Flensburg, a small city on the Danish border in Schleswig-Holstein, according to Wikipedia and an XLR8R profile. His exact birth date is not published. In that XLR8R piece he describes Flensburg as a place with little to do for young people, and he credits American hip-hop, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde among them, with pulling him into music. Wikipedia also notes an early attachment to synth acts such as Depeche Mode and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

He started as a DJ and rapper in local hip-hop groups, and entered DMC mixing competitions as a teenager. Wikipedia records second place at the German DMC Championship in 1991, while XLR8R dates a first runner-up finish to 1988, when he was 16. Either way, the technical grounding in turntablism shows up in everything he has made since, in the cut-up vocals and the way a loop will stall just long enough to make you lean forward.

In 1993 he moved to Hamburg, where he and Cosmic DJ, DJ Stachy and the rapper known as Schreckliche Sven formed the hip-hop group Fischmob. Their debut album, Männer Können Seine Gefühle Nicht Zeigen (1995), sold more than 50,000 copies according to XLR8R, and the group dissolved around 1998 after a spell on a major label. Koze and Cosmic DJ then teamed up with Erobique as International Pony, which released We Love Music in 2002 and Mit Dir sind wir vier in 2006.

Kompakt, Pampa and the Koze sound

The turn toward club music came through the Cologne label Kompakt. XLR8R traces the connection to a late-1990s DJ set in which he mixed Steve Bug's "Loverboy" with Blumfeld's "Tausend Tränen Tief". From 2003 Kompakt released his techno maxis, some under the alias Monaco Schranze, including The Geklöppel Continues (2003) and Late Check Out (2004), and then his debut album Kosi Comes Around in 2005. RTS.FM's history of Kompakt Records notes that when the label marked its 500th release in May 2025, Koze was among the names on the anniversary compilation.

He has run his own label, Pampa Records, since 2009. XLR8R says he started it with Marcus Fink. Pampa became the home for Amygdala (2013), which entered the German and Swiss charts and won him the critics' award at the 2014 Echo Pop ceremony, and for Knock Knock (4 May 2018). Knock Knock gave him a second wave of acclaim: Wikipedia lists it at No. 3 on Pitchfork's 50 best albums of 2018, and its single "Pick Up" took first place in Mixmag's top 50 tracks of that year. In October 2018 he won the Preis für Popkultur in the favourite producer category.

His reputation as a remixer runs alongside the albums. He has reworked Moderat, Mount Kimbie, Gorillaz, Hildegard Knef and Herbert, among many others, and Studio !K7 released his DJ-Kicks mix, the 50th in the series, on 15 June 2015. Under the Adolf Noise name he makes more experimental and satirical material, including the 2001 single "Deine Reime sind Schweine".

What ties it together is a loose, warm approach to rhythm and sampling. His records move between house, ambient passages, hip-hop-schooled editing and pop song structures, and his work with guest vocalists, such as Damon Albarn on Music Can Hear Us and Róisín Murphy on Hit Parade, shows how comfortably he writes for singers.

Live career: from Sydney Opera House to festival fields

Koze is a fixture on the European festival circuit. RTS.FM's Waking Life and Nachtdigital festival pages both list him among past performers, and Wikipedia's biography adds that he has performed at Coachella, Roskilde, Sónar, Time Warp, Mutek, Melt! and Tomorrowland, among others. On 12 December 2019 he made his debut in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House and premiered his audiovisual show Popup Jungle there.

Hit Parade, Music Can Hear Us and 2026

In 2023 he produced Róisín Murphy's album Hit Parade for Ninja Tune, which came out on 8 September 2023 and reached No. 6 in Germany and No. 5 in the UK in its first week, according to Wikipedia. Groove magazine named him Producer of the Year in 2024.

On 29 November 2024 he announced Music Can Hear Us, with "Pure Love" featuring Damon Albarn as the first single. The album arrived on Pampa on 4 April 2025, a 15-track, roughly 65-minute set that Beatportal described as spanning many genres, with Sofia Kourtesis guesting on the ambient "Tu Dime Cuando". German Wikipedia records that the Süddeutsche Zeitung named it album of the year.

The follow-up came quickly. Pampa released the title track of the Spiralen EP digitally on 22 May 2026, and the EP, a double A-side with "Wo's Patric?!?", followed on vinyl and digital on 12 June 2026 as catalogue number PAMPA045. Wikipedia also lists his 2026 remix of Paul Valentin's "Elvau", featuring Liv Lisa Fries, on Feines Tier.
