Deep HouseHouse

Few Russian DJs are as tied to a single room and a single night of the week as Sergey Sanches. For about 25 years his Thursday party at Propaganda, the Moscow club near Kitay-gorod, was a fixed point on the city's house music calendar. He plays deep house, he credits a Spanish grandfather for his surname, and he is one of the longest-serving names in the RTS.FM archive.

Early Life and Path Into Music

According to the biography on his Discogs profile, Sanches played piano for four years as a child and started DJing at school parties. His turning point was a radio show: DJ Fonar invited young DJs to send in promo mixes, and Sanches recorded one, although he never got a reply. The snub pushed him to take DJing seriously. His first residency was at the club Ptyuch, which the profile calls legendary, and he later started his own party series at the club Luch. His first listed release on Discogs is the 1997 mix Teoriya Dvizheniya, on Citadel and Azon.

Thursdays at Propaganda

The party that defined his career, Chetvergi Sanchesa ("Sanches' Thursdays"), began on 28 May 1998, about a year after Propaganda opened on Zlatoustinsky Lane, according to a Moskvich Mag interview. It ran weekly for 25 years. The final night was held on 25 May 2023 and, per Moskvich Mag's report, lasted until club management called time around 6 a.m. Sanches played vinyl for much of it, something he now rarely does, and switched to digital tracks towards morning.

The residency generated its own discography. Discogs lists a run of anniversary mixes that follow the party year by year, including "Propaganda. Thursdays of Sanches. 3 years" (2001), "5 years" (2003), "8 years" (2006) and "16 years" (2014).

Sound and Style

Moskvich Mag describes him as a deep house selector, and his discography on Discogs is dominated by mixes and compilations rather than artist albums, among them Double Connections on Only Records (2000) and Peremennaya Oblachnost on Illegal Sound (2003). In the interview he says his main focus is DJing, not producing, though he mentions remixes and vinyl releases. Later mixes include Cat In The Rain, issued in 2006 by Shanti, and Masters Sketchbook, Part One, on Algorythmik Records (2010).

Moscow's House Community

In the mid 2000s Sanches was part of the House Music.Ru circle. Discogs credits him alongside Sapunov, Bell and Djungl on the 2005 compilation HM Tour Collection and the 2006 release Housemusic.ru: Djungl / Sapunov / Sanches / Bell. In 2007 he shared the Solyanka compilation with Anton Kubikov and Sergey Sapunov, the same trio that appears on one RTS.FM night in the archive. In 2023 he told Moskvich Mag that he has lived in Barcelona since 2014 and that, before the pandemic, he flew to Moscow every week to play the Thursday party.

RTS.FM Connection

Sanches is one of the most frequent guests in the RTS.FM archive: 35 videos carry his name in the title, mostly sets dated between 2008 and 2012 in their titles (some are duplicate uploads of the same recording, and one is a shared night with Kubikov and Sapunov). Two of them are embedded below.
