Theo Parrish

Detroit-based DJ and producer Theo Parrish founded Sound Signature in 1997 and blends soul, jazz and disco into house, from Parallel Dimensions onward.
Few DJs arrived at the booth by way of a sculpture studio. Theo Parrish trained as an artist before he made a record, and the habit shows: his sets are built slowly, from rough edges and odd materials, and they are allowed to take the shape the room asks for. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1972 and raised in Chicago, he has lived in Detroit since finishing art school and has run his own label, Sound Signature, since 1997.
Chicago, Kansas City and the Move to Detroit
According to Wikipedia, Parrish grew up in Chicago, listening to Miles Davis, Nina Simone and George Gershwin, and studied at the Chicago Academy of the Arts before enrolling at the Kansas City Art Institute, where he earned a BFA in 1994 with a focus on sound sculptures. After graduating he moved to Detroit, where he still lives. Blank Forms, which has presented his work, describes a young Parrish raised around the early house scene of Chicago's South Side, and credits Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.) as a personal mentor after the move to Detroit.
His discography from this period is thin on certainties and thick on fragments. Wikipedia lists the track "Lake Shore Drive" from 1995 and the Baby Steps EP in 1996, and Blank Forms places his first 12-inch on Dixon's KDJ label in 1997. Sources differ on which release counts as first, so it is safer to say that by 1997 he was releasing records and had started his own label.
Sound Signature
Parrish launched Sound Signature in 1997 and used it to release his music on his own terms. The label has since issued work by other Detroit artists, among them Alton Miller, Byron The Aquarius, Omar S and Specter, as well as the 3 Chairs project, a house supergroup that pairs Parrish with Moodymann, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman. His debut album, First Floor, appeared on Peacefrog in 1998, and Parallel Dimensions followed on Sound Signature in 2000. Later full-lengths include Sound Sculptures Volume 1 (2007), Sketches (2010) and American Intelligence (2014). In 2007 he also released Et Tu Brute with Duminie Deporres on Submerge.
Ugly Edits and the DJ
Alongside the label, Parrish became known for Ugly Edits, a series of unlicensed reworks of dance floor classics that he put out in the manner of a bootleg, with hand spray-painted label artwork, according to Blank Forms. By the early 2000s he also held a residency at APT in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. His sets from this era drew a reputation as marathons that mix soul, jazz, disco and new wave, classics and obscurities, as Wikipedia puts it, with an ear for repetition that Vice has praised.
His connection to Detroit's wider house lineage is public and long running. At Dekmantel's 2014 edition in Amsterdam, a Three Chairs set with Moodymann, Marcellus Pittman and Rick Wilhite was among the festival's standout moments, as recounted on our Dekmantel Festival page.
Sound and Philosophy
The approach is consistent across records and sets. Parrish has often used the Akai MPC 2000XL in the studio, and his DJ sets pull from disco, jazz, soul and new wave rather than from a single genre lane. Blank Forms frames his project as an effort to keep electronic dance music's identity as a Black art form intact. In 2022, when he mixed the DJ-Kicks edition for !K7, he chose to fill all 19 tracks with music by Detroit artists, most of them signed exclusively for the project, and a short film, Detroit Forward, accompanied it. "Detroit creates. But rarely imitates," he told Mixmag.
His most recent release in the sources consulted is Free Myself, a collaboration with Maurissa Rose on Sound Signature in 2023. Blank Forms has also published a book, Sound Signatures, built from a long conversation between Parrish and the journalist Mike Rubin.
