History

Dimensions launched in 2012 as the sister festival of Outlook, the bass-music gathering run by the same team, with a remit to give the deeper end of house, techno and club music its own space. The first edition ran September 6 to 9, 2012 at Fort Punta Christo, a mid-19th-century fortress built to defend Pula on Croatia's Istrian coast that had been abandoned and overgrown until the Outlook crew cleared it. Even that debut was a serious bill: Theo Parrish and Motor City Drum Ensemble were both on the 2012 lineup.

The fort years set the template. Stages were carved out of the fortress itself, including a small circular open-air room called the Ballroom and a horseshoe-shaped space called the Dungeon, and the festival opened each year with a separate concert at Pula's Roman amphitheatre. Bonobo, Mount Kimbie and Portico Quartet played the 2013 opener, and Grace Jones and Moderat headlined it in 2017. Resident Advisor ran its own stage, The Clearing, in 2014, where Theo Parrish was billed to play live, Moodymann and Robert Hood were on the bill, and Nina Kraviz was billed for the final night. That same year, a lightning storm pushed Motor City Drum Ensemble and Floating Points to share the decks for a back-to-back set. In 2017, Jeff Mills played The Clearing, and Theo Parrish played a set of about eight hours.

In October 2019, the organizers announced that Dimensions and Outlook would leave Pula for The Garden in Tisno, in Šibenik-Knin County, after bad weather and power cuts at the end of the previous summer. Time Out reported that Pula's site could handle about 15,000 people while The Garden usually caters to about 5,000. The festival's own site dates the move to 2021 and says it has never felt a stronger connection between the music and the people since arriving. The 2026 edition, run from August 27 to 31, was its fourteenth by one listing's count, and late-night programming runs at Barbarella's, an open-air club in nearby Pirovac.
