• October 2026, Gamma Rays EP. Axis lists Gamma Rays as AX131, four tracks (i4, i8, i6, i2) recorded in 1995 for the Live at the Liquid Room sessions and kept on quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape ever since. Resident Advisor reports a 30 October 2026 release and says it follows his The Drifter EP in the Axis Expressionist Series.
• 20 November 2026, The Forbidden Planet. The second album from Tomorrow Comes The Harvest, the trio of Mills, keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary and tabla player Prabhu Edouard, with flautist Rasheeda Ali, is announced for Axis on 20 November 2026. The project grew out of Mills's drum-led work with the late Tony Allen.
• 13 November 2026, Mexico City. Songkick lists Mills at Fronton Bucareli on 13 November 2026. Check the venue before travelling, as listings change.

• June 2026, The Trip To Vega. RA reported the 11-track concept album, set in 2097 as humanity leaves Earth for the Vega system, for release on Axis on 19 June 2026. It follows the Whatever The Case EP (May 2026).
• November 2025 to 2026, Live at the Liquid Room 30th anniversary tour. RA's announcement listed London (fabric, 8 November 2025), Osaka, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Paris (5 December 2025), with more dates to be announced. The set recreates his 1995 Tokyo mix using two turntables and two reel-to-reel tape machines.

Detroit Roots and the Wizard

Mills was born on June 18, 1963, in Detroit, and came up in the same city, the same era, that produced the Belleville Three, the trio whose story anchors Movement festival's own 20th anniversary and Detroit's history as techno's birthplace. Before he was known as a producer, Mills was known as a radio mixer. As "the Wizard," he hosted a nightly show, first on WDRQ and later WJLB, where he built a local following on beat juggling, rapid scratching and mixes that jumped between New Wave, industrial, electro and the emerging Detroit and Chicago house and techno sounds. The speed and precision of those broadcasts became part of Detroit radio lore well before Mills had a record out under his own name. The Detroit lineage he came out of runs through Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.

Underground Resistance

In the late 1980s, Mills co-founded Underground Resistance with "Mad" Mike Banks, with Robert Hood among the early members, a group that positioned itself explicitly outside the mainstream music industry and treated techno as a political project as much as a musical one. Wikipedia says Mills left in 1991 (Discogs gives 1992) and relocated to New York, then Berlin, where he became a resident at Tresor, and began building a solo career on his own terms.

Axis Records and the Minimal Turn

Mills founded Axis Records in 1992 (the label's own site gives that year), and the label became the vehicle for the sound he is now most associated with: stripped-down, hypnotic, relentlessly functional techno built around repetition rather than melody. Axis spawned sub-labels, including Purpose Maker and Tomorrow, that let Mills separate his rawer, DJ-tool material from more conceptual, album-length work. His Tresor residency tied Detroit's originators to the Berlin scene, and Frankfurt's Omen, the club at the center of Cocoon Recordings' own 25-year story, counted Mills among the DJs it hosted during its 1988 to 1998 run.

Sound and Style

Mills built a technical reputation that is unusual even among techno's more skilled selectors. He is known for working with more than two decks at once, and for playing a Roland TR-909 drum machine live over the mix, a technique he described to MusicTech. His 1995 Liquid Room set in Tokyo used two turntables and two reel-to-reel tape machines. That approach produces a sound that is fast, sparse and mechanically precise, techno stripped to kick, hat and a handful of moving parts, which is exactly what minimal and hypnotic techno as genre terms are usually describing. His catalogue extends well past club records. He scored a new soundtrack for Fritz Lang's silent film Metropolis, released in 2000, later performed a live four-turntable cinemix for Lang's earlier silent feature Woman in the Moon (1929), recorded Blue Potential, a 2006 live album with the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra, and released Tomorrow Comes the Harvest, a 2018 EP with Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen on Blue Note. In April 2017 the French Order of Arts and Letters promoted him to Officier, with Jack Lang presenting the award, according to FACT, which also notes he had been made a Knight in 2007. Career Highlights and the Next Generation

Mills' guest bookings, including Movement Detroit in 2007, 2014 and 2026, read like a map of techno's most important rooms, including a residency-era relationship with clubs across Germany, one of which was Munich's BLITZ, the Ilian Tape-affiliated venue that closed in 2026 after nine years as one of the country's most respected small techno rooms, with Mills among the guest names that appeared on its programming history.

His relevance has not dimmed with age. In July 2026, Mills was billed for the Junction 2 x fabric weekend in London, where he is listed in Room 01 at Junction 2 x fabric by Night, and Nina Kraviz was announced for the same day, a pairing that read as a direct line between Detroit's founding generation and the artists carrying techno forward today, the same artists tracked across Nina Kraviz's own eventful 2026. Few DJs from Mills' original cohort still headline rooms alongside performers thirty years their junior on equal footing. Fewer still do it while remaining recognizably, unmistakably themselves behind the decks.
