History

Junction 2 was founded in 2016 by London Warehouse Events (LWE), the production and promotion outfit behind a run of London club nights, under co-founder Will Harold. Harold has described the festival as "born out of our passion for music," built specifically to be, in his words, "the festival that we felt that London was missing," a dedicated home for house and techno in a city whose bigger festivals leaned toward broader, more mainstream bills. From its first announcement, Junction 2 also committed to a no-VIP policy, a deliberate stance against the segregated, tiered festival experiences that had become common across UK dance events, built instead around what the team called "one ticket, one collective experience."

The inaugural edition took place on Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Boston Manor Park in Brentford, west London, drawing around 5,000 people. The lineup paired Drumcode's Adam Beyer and Alan Fitzpatrick with Detroit originator Carl Craig, who performed his live Modular Pursuits show, alongside Ida Engberg, Pan-Pot and Boxia, split across stages hosted by Drumcode, The Hydra and LWE's own Closer brand. Beyer, whose Drumcode crew anchored that first bill, has returned for the festival's biggest editions since, including its 2026 tenth-anniversary edition a decade later.

Boston Manor Park has stayed the constant through all of that growth, and its physical geography became the festival's visual signature. The M4 motorway's elevated flyover runs directly through the park, and Junction 2 built its main stage, The Bridge, in the concrete space underneath it, pairing exposed structural columns and passing traffic overhead with a serious sound rig. A second stage, The Woods, sits in a more sheltered, tree-lined pocket of the same park. The park itself is older than the festival by centuries: it surrounds Boston Manor House, a Grade II* listed Jacobean manor built in 1622 to 1623, on an estate that traces back to at least the medieval period. The Clitherow family sold the house and around 50 acres to Brentford Urban District Council in 1923, and the park opened to the public on September 11, 1924.

Junction 2 marked its tenth anniversary in 2026 with an expanded edition branded J2 X, returning to Boston Manor Park across the weekend of July 25 and 26. The Saturday leg paired the festival's outdoor stages with an evening handover to fabric in Farringdon, billed as "Junction 2 x fabric by Night." That crossover put Jeff Mills, the Detroit originator whose career runs back to the genre's earliest days, on the same bill as Nina Kraviz, alongside Marcel Dettmann b2b DJ Hell, Nicolas Lutz and other names drawn from the same club-first pool of artists Junction 2 and fabric have both booked from for years. It was less a one-off crossover than a natural fit, a decade of shared audiences and shared bookings finally sharing a single night.
