TechnoDetroit TechnoElectronica

Carl Craig is the producer most often named when people talk about what happened to Detroit techno after the Belleville Three. Where Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson set the template, Craig stretched it: into jazz as Innerzone Orchestra, into house as Paperclip People, into orchestral collaborations and, more recently, gallery installations. Over more than thirty years his Planet E label has been a base for other Detroit artists too.

Early Life and Path Into Music

Craig was born in Detroit on 22 May 1969, according to the Detroit Historical Society. The Society says he was introduced to electronic music through Derrick May's radio program Street Beat, experimented on basic equipment, and was eventually introduced to May himself, becoming his protege. Wikipedia adds that he passed a tape of home-studio productions to someone connected to May, and that he attended Cooley High School. The Historical Society says May folded him into his Rhythim Is Rhythim project and took him on a European tour, and that Craig's early recordings were distributed on May's Transmat label.

Aliases and Early Releases

Wikipedia dates his releases to 1989 and lists a long run of aliases, including Psyche, BFC, 69, Paperclip People and Innerzone Orchestra. Many of the early Psyche and BFC tracks were gathered on the 1996 compilation Elements 1989 to 1990. The Historical Society says he co-founded a short-lived label, Retroactive, in 1990 before launching Planet E in 1991. The Historical Society says his work with jazz was particularly fruitful, and that his recordings as Innerzone Orchestra featured live instrumentation.

"Bug in the Bass Bin", credited to Innerzone Orchestra, has its own place in British dance history. Wikipedia reports that UK DJs began playing the track at 45 rpm instead of its intended 33, and quotes Now magazine arguing that it helped write the blueprint for drum and bass in England.

Planet E and the Label Story

Planet E Communications was founded in 1991 in Detroit, and Wikipedia's entry on the label says its first release was "4 Jazz Funk Classics", recorded by Craig as 69. At first the catalogue was mostly his own projects under multiple names, before the label became a home for artists including Kevin Saunderson, Moodymann, Kenny Larkin and Recloose. It also has a subsidiary, Community Projects, which Craig set up for music outside the techno frame, from Afro blues to space jazz. Our study of independent label ownership lists Planet E among the labels still run by their founder.

Sound and Style

Craig's approach is to treat techno as a starting point. Wikipedia lists soul, jazz, new wave, industrial and krautrock among his sources, and notes that his work covers ambient techno, breakbeat, house, classical and modular synthesizer. In a 2015 interview cited there, he named The Electrifying Mojo, Prince, Kraftwerk, Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills as his biggest influences. His debut album, Landcruising (1995), on Blanco y Negro, was conceived as a soundtrack for driving around Detroit's streets, and More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art (1997) was placed at number 29 on Pitchfork's list of the 50 best IDM albums of all time, according to Wikipedia.

Remixes, Collaborations and Installations

Craig has remixed artists including Manuel Göttsching, Maurizio, Theo Parrish, Tori Amos and Depeche Mode. Wikipedia reports that he was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording for his remix of Junior Boys' "Like a Child". The Planet E biography on Discogs says he has made six albums and more than 600 remixes. Collaborative records include Recomposed (2008) with Moritz von Oswald on Deutsche Grammophon, and Unity (2015) with Green Velvet. He has also released mixes in the DJ-Kicks and Fabric series, per Wikipedia's discography.

More recently, he created Party/After-Party, an immersive sound and light installation that premiered at Dia:Beacon in 2020 and later went to MOCA in Los Angeles. A documentary, Desire: The Carl Craig Story, directed by Jean-Cosme Delaloye, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2024, according to Wikipedia.

Detroit and Movement

Craig was co-creator and artistic director of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000 and 2001, according to Wikipedia, which also records that his dismissal by the organisers caused substantial controversy in the Detroit scene and that he returned as artistic director in 2010. The festival is now Movement, and our 20-year retrospective on Movement lists a Carl Craig and Cajmere pairing on the 2026 programme, with more on the festival's history on the Movement Detroit page. Elsewhere, Bloc's 2016 farewell weekend counted him among its names.
