Underground Resistance

Underground Resistance is less a band than an argument about what techno is for. Founded in Detroit in 1989, the collective and label built its identity on independence, anonymity and a deliberately confrontational politics, and has held to that position through more than three decades of lineup changes, distribution deals and attempts by the industry to co-opt its records. Its name is shorthand for the second wave of Detroit techno that followed the Belleville Three.

• July and August 2026, Dekmantel. The lineup announcement of 21 January 2026 had UR returning to the Amsterdamse Bos with vocalist and poet Saul Williams, according to Resident Advisor and Dekmantel. The festival ran 29 July to 2 August 2026. See our Dekmantel festival page.

RA's guide to Movement lists a live set from UR in the Tresor Saturday takeover with Surgeon at Tangent Gallery, during the week Mayor Mary Sheffield declared Detroit Techno Week (20 to 26 May). How It Started

Wikipedia says Underground Resistance, usually shortened to UR, was formed in 1989 by "Mad" Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, and that its early music related the aesthetics of Detroit techno to the social and economic circumstances of Reagan-era inner-city decline. Discogs describes the early catalogue as the product of various combinations of Banks, Mills and Robert Hood, who came in from a house and techno background, and records that Mills and Hood left in 1992. In a Red Bull Music Academy interview, Hood describes his own early role as running the label's daily business while Banks and Mills were out of town, and recalls the loft where he lived as UR's headquarters. The first releases came in 1990, per Wikipedia, with "The Theory" and "Eye of the Storm" (Sonic EP). They were followed by Riot, Acid Rain and a run of EPs and singles through the early 1990s, and by the side projects X-101 and X-102. Wikipedia says that after Mills and Hood left, Banks continued to lead UR with releases including "Return of Acid Rain", "Message to the Majors" and, as Galaxy 2 Galaxy, the nu-jazz-leaning "Hi-Tech Jazz".

Anonymity and Independence

Two ideas define UR in the public record. One is anonymity. Discogs says members refuse to be photographed without their faces covered, and Wikipedia describes the practice as a pushback against the idea of the superstar DJ. In a 1994 Jockey Slut interview reproduced by Disco Pogo, Banks said he rarely did interviews and disliked being photographed, and described his techno as "subversive and mind awakening".

The other is independence. Discogs frames UR's business philosophy as almost strictly DIY, trading mainstream success for self-determination, and our study of independent label ownership found that UR, founded in 1989, still has Banks as co-owner and still moves its records through the independent Submerge Distribution. Submerge and the Detroit Base

Banks and Mills created Submerge to bring several small Detroit labels together so they could operate as stronger businesses, according to the Music Origins Project, which quotes Banks in 1994 saying the labels lacked business training and that a single operation could handle distribution and invoices. It lists the UR, Transmat, Red Planet and Distorted Soul labels as early Submerge members, and says Submerge moved from 2030 Grand River to 3000 East Grand Boulevard between 2000 and 2002. Today the building houses Exhibit 3000, described by EDM Is Life as the world's first and only techno museum, along with recording studios and a record store. The same article reports Roland's 2024 short film Somewhere in Detroit, which features Banks, label manager Cornelius Harris and others from the Submerge co-op.

Members and Associated Artists

Membership has always been fluid and often deliberately unannounced. Discogs lists, among others, Mike Banks, Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Gerald Mitchell, Mike Clark, Marc Floyd, Cornelius Harris, Raphael Merriweathers Jr., James Stinson and Rolando Rocha. Wikipedia adds that James Stinson of Drexciya was among those who cycled through the collective, and that DJ Rolando's EP "Knights of the Jaguar", the group's most commercially successful, became the subject of a dispute with Sony BMG over a trance cover version, the details of which it describes as contested. Rolando left in 2004, according to the same article. The younger generation includes Waajeed, who launched the Underground Music Academy in May 2023 as a Detroit community music hub, per Wikipedia.

Sound and Style

Discogs describes the early UR catalogue as combining Motown and Chicago soul with lo-fi techno, acid and electro. Wikipedia reports that Interstellar Fugitives, the first full album credited to UR, came out in 1998 and moved Banks's sound toward what he called high-tech funk, with breakbeats, electro and downtempo hip-hop alongside the club tracks.
