Juan Atkins, widely called the godfather of techno, has died. His booking agency, Greensmith Artists, announced his death on 1 November 2026, and outlets including NBC News and Rolling Stone reported him as 64. Our news report on his death sets out what has been published so far. This profile covers his career.
If techno has a founding father, most histories name Juan Atkins. He was the first of the Belleville Three to make records, the person who taught Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson how to DJ, and the producer behind two of the genre's earliest reference points: Cybotron's "Clear" and Model 500's "No UFO's". Mixmag has described him, in Wikipedia's words, as "the original pioneer of Detroit techno".
Early Life and Path Into Music
Atkins was born in Detroit in 1962, according to Wikipedia and the Detroit Historical Society. The two sources give different birth dates, so only the year is stated here. The Historical Society says he grew up on Detroit's east side before moving to Belleville, Michigan, as a teenager. Wikipedia reports that he played guitar and bass in funk and garage bands as a child and bought his first synthesizer, a Korg MS-10, at 15. At Belleville High School he became friends with May and Saunderson, and the three would later be known as the Belleville Three, a story we retell in our look at Detroit techno and Movement.
The influences are well documented. The Historical Society points to George Clinton and Kraftwerk, and to the radio shows of The Electrifying Mojo, which brought new sounds to Detroit listeners. Wikipedia quotes AllMusic's description of his vision as a futuristic music welding Parliament-style funk to the rigid synth pop of Kraftwerk and the techno-futurist ideas of sociologist Alvin Toffler.
Cybotron
Atkins formed Cybotron with Richard "3070" Davis in 1980, according to Wikipedia's article on the group. Its early records, including "Alleys of Your Mind" and "Cosmic Cars", appeared on Atkins's own Deep Space label, and the group's tracks "Clear" and "Techno City" are described there as early works in electronic music history. The debut album Enter followed in 1983. The Historical Society says "Clear" made its way onto charts around the United States, and also notes that the word techno came to be applied to the genre through "Techno City", appearing on a British compilation. Atkins left in 1985 after creative differences with Davis, per Wikipedia.
Wikipedia's article on Atkins quotes AllMusic's John Bush calling the 1982 Cybotron track "Clear" the easiest choice for techno's genesis, while cautioning that picking the precise start of any genre is difficult and misleading.
Metroplex and Model 500
In 1985 Atkins founded Metroplex and began releasing as Model 500, according to Wikipedia's Metroplex entry and his biography. The label's first catalogue number is Model 500's "No UFO's" b/w "Future" (1985). The same entry lists Metroplex releases by the Detroit artists Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes ("Goodbye Kiss", 1986) and Kreem ("Triangle of Love", 1986), the latter being Kevin Saunderson's first single. Our timeline of techno tempo also notes that "No UFO's" is generally considered the first techno production.
Atkins did most of his Metroplex work under Model 500 and the alias Infiniti. Discography entries on Wikipedia run from "No UFO's" and "Night Drive" in 1985 through "Sound of Stereo" and "Interference" in 1987 and 1988, to the Model 500 albums Deep Space (1995), Mind and Body (1999) and Digital Solutions (2015). He also recorded as Channel One with Doug Craig, with the 1986 single "Technicolor", per the same source.
Collaborations and Later Work
Atkins was also one half of Borderland with Moritz von Oswald. The duo released Borderland in 2013 and Transport in 2016, according to Wikipedia. His 1992 album 3MB Featuring Magic Juan Atkins was a collaboration with Thomas Fehlmann and von Oswald, and in 2017 he made Mind Merge with Orlando Voorn as Frequency vs Atkins. The Discogs entry for Atkins adds that he released albums, remixes and collaborations on Belgium's R&S Records and Germany's Tresor.
At Movement's 20th anniversary in 2026, our festival coverage records a collaborative set pairing Juan Atkins with Moritz Von Oswald, part of a programme that put Detroit's first generation on the same stages as younger artists. More on the festival is on the Movement Detroit page. Atkins also appears in the 2006 documentary High Tech Soul and the 2019 short Black to Techno, per Wikipedia's filmography.
Sound and Style
Aesthetically, Wikipedia says, Atkins drew on dystopian science fiction to build his sonic landscapes, and later incorporated elements of contemporary dance music while keeping what critics consider his signature sense of melody.
