Juan Atkins, the Detroit producer widely credited as a co-creator of techno, has died at 64. His booking agency, Greensmith Artists, announced his death on Sunday 1 November 2026, according to NBC News and Rolling Stone. He was in Mexico City for a show that was due to take place on Saturday 31 October, and the reports do not give a cause of death.

This is a developing story and we have kept to what major outlets have published. Where reports differ or say nothing, we say so.

What do the reports say happened?

NBC News reported that Atkins had been due to perform on the Saturday at Yu Yu in Mexico City, and that the club cancelled the appearance and announced the cancellation on Instagram before news of his death broke. His agency then announced his death on Instagram, and his Belleville Three bandmate Kevin Saunderson shared the news on Facebook.

Rolling Stone, citing Resident Advisor, reported that Atkins was found unresponsive in his hotel room before the performance and was declared dead at a hospital soon after. We Rave You gives the same account and names the venue as YuYu Cine Club. No outlet we read states an exact date of death, and no cause has been released. We are not going to speculate.

Who was Juan Atkins?

Atkins was born in Detroit in 1962 and grew up in Belleville, Michigan, where he met Derrick May and Saunderson at high school. The three became known as the Belleville Three. With Richard Davis he formed Cybotron, whose "Clear" is one of the records most often named as a starting point for techno, and in 1985 he founded Metroplex and began releasing as Model 500 with "No UFO's". Our full profile of Juan Atkins covers the career in detail, and our report on Movement's 20th anniversary retells the Belleville story and records a 2026 set that paired him with Moritz von Oswald.

NBC notes that Missy Elliott sampled "Clear" for her 2005 song "Lose Control", and that in 2023 Atkins revived Cybotron with the Berlin producer Laurens von Oswald, releasing new music on Tresor. For how early Detroit records fit into the history of tempo, see our guide to techno BPM.

How has the scene responded?

Saunderson called him "the originator of Techno" in a statement quoted by NBC. Carl Cox said he heard the news with a heavy heart, and Sven Väth called it heartbreaking and said Atkins's vision helped build a musical bridge between Detroit and Berlin, according to the same report. Rolling Stone also quotes Saunderson calling it heartbreaking news.

What we do not know

  • The date of death. Outlets report the agency's announcement on 1 November and a performance planned for 31 October, but give no date of death.
  • The cause. None has been released in the reports we read.
  • Funeral or memorial plans. None had been announced in the reports we read.
