Boris Brejcha Will Retire in 2028: The Joker's Story

Boris Brejcha announced on 24 October that 2028 is his last year. What he said, what is still unknown, and how a Ludwigshafen producer became The Joker.

On Saturday 24 October 2026 the German producer Boris Brejcha published a video in which he said he will end his career at the end of 2028. He is not ill and has not fallen out of love with music, he said; he simply wants to close the story of Boris Brejcha and The Joker on his own terms. 2027 will be his last year of festival bookings, and 2028 a farewell headline tour called "Last Chapter: Becoming the Joker". There are no dates, cities or ticket links yet.

This piece sets out what was announced and what is still open, then tells how a producer from Ludwigshafen who started on a school friend's hardcore CD ended up filling arenas in a mask. We read the announcement coverage in English and German, the artist's older interviews, and his label's own history page, and we say where sources disagree.

The short version: Brejcha, 44, began releasing in 2006, found a wide audience with "Purple Noise" in 2014, founded his label Fckng Serious in 2015, and became a streaming-era phenomenon through Cercle films and a Tomorrowland set that reportedly drew around 90 million YouTube views. He signed to Ultra for the 2020 album Space Diver, played Coachella and Red Rocks, and this year headlined the Hollywood Bowl with an orchestra. His DJ Mag Top 100 peak was No. 42 in 2021.

What did Boris Brejcha announce?

The announcement came as a video on his social channels on 24 October 2026, with a comment under the post that explains his reasoning. DJ Mag Germany, which dates its report 25 October, describes the video as opening with a saying of his father's, that you should stop when things are at their best. English-language outlets carried the news on 24 to 26 October.

What he said, as reported:

  • When: he will end his career at the end of 2028. In the video he says, in DJ Mag Germany's transcription, that he will close the chapter of Boris Brejcha and The Joker.
  • What happens until then: 2027 is his last year of festival performances. In 2028 he plans as many shows as possible, billed as his final headline tour, "Last Chapter: Becoming the Joker".
  • Why: in the comment he says he decided alone after long thought, and "I'm not sick, nor have I lost my joy in making music", as Time To House renders it. He compares the ending to a good book that closes with a happy ending. His team told the press that he had considered retiring for several years and spent the last two thinking about what comes next.
  • After 2028: he says he wants to write a new story whose course he does not know yet. His press release calls the step a withdrawal from his music career.
  • Fans: his website links to becomingthejoker.com, where fans can register for updates.

What is still unknown?

Nothing in the coverage we read names the 2027 festivals, the 2028 tour cities, the ticket plans or the label's future. It is also open whether he will keep releasing music after 2028 under any name, because the announcement describes an end to the Boris Brejcha and Joker chapter, not a plan for what he does next. Several outlets repeat the same figures and the same biography, and we found no independent reporting beyond the video and its comment. We will update this page when dates appear.

Where did Boris Brejcha come from?

Brejcha was born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 1981; Wikipedia gives 26 November, and a 909originals report says his 2021 album came out on his 40th birthday. At six he was at the Flugtag '88 air show at Ramstein Air Base, where three aircraft collided and 70 people died, and he was one of hundreds injured, left with burn scars, according to Beatportal's 2023 profile. He has said in interviews that this is not why he wears a mask. We note it only because it is part of his published biography and he has spoken about it himself.

His entry into music was ordinary. At about twelve a friend gave him a Thunderdome CD, and he had only known trance before; he started making tracks on a home computer. He worked a part-time job at the telecoms company Telekom while releasing his first records, two minimal EPs on the Berlin label Autist in 2006, according to Beatportal. Albums on Harthouse followed in the late 2000s.

Why the mask, and what is High-Tech Minimal?

The mask came with his first big gig: Universo Paralello festival in Brazil, which his label's biography and most outlets date to 2006, although Beatportal's telling suggests the invitation came somewhat later. He has said he picked a carnival-inspired joker mask to stand out, and that he later quit his job after the invitation. Wikipedia and a few other outlets describe the design as a Venetian carnival mask, while his own account points to Brazilian carnival, so we say only "carnival-inspired". In a 2023 interview with Gray Area he described it as a joke at the start of his career, and he told Beatportal that it gives him two shows in one, one with the mask and one without.

The sound has its own name too. In a 2020 interview with Attack Magazine he said he created his own genre, High-Tech Minimal, because it is his personal style and he is tired of music being put in boxes. Attack places it across techno, tech house, minimal, melodic techno and progressive, and calls it more accessible than his earlier work. He plays only his own productions in his sets and makes everything in the box with a MIDI keyboard, per Beatportal and Attack.

How did he break through?

The pieces of the rise are consistent across sources, even where the years wobble.

  • 2014, "Purple Noise". On the album Feuerfalter Part 02, this is the track he credits with reaching a wider audience. In 2025 he still named it among the tracks that get the biggest reaction.
  • 2015, Fckng Serious. He founded his own label, with Ann Clue and Deniz Bul involved from the start. In 2020 he called Clue, his best friend and former partner, the person who played the most important role in his career, saying she took over his booking and management. The label says it later ran bus tours of Europe and North America, which it describes as a first for an electronic label, though that is its own claim.
  • Cercle. The streamed sets were the turning point. He has called his two Cercle films, at the Château de Fontainebleau and the Grand Palais in Paris, key moments in his career; he gave 2016 and 2018 in 2020 while other sources say 2017 and 2019, so we leave the years out. Noctis reported more than 25 million views for Fontainebleau around 2020, and Time To House says the Grand Palais set has passed 60 million, a figure we saw only there.
  • 2018, Tomorrowland. A set on the Atmosphere stage went viral on YouTube, with about 90 million views at the time of Beatportal's April 2023 profile and 95 million in Gray Area's August 2023 piece. He also made his Time Warp debut in 2018 (see our Time Warp festival page).
  • 2019, Ibiza. On 19 July he played Ushuaia in a one-off with Sven Väth, and on 14 and 21 August he took over two Wednesdays at Hï Ibiza, according to Ibiza Spotlight and Mixmag. It was not a residency.

What did the major-label years look like?

His biggest-stage period began with Ultra Music. "Gravity" came out in 2019, and Space Diver, released on 24 January 2020, was his first album for Ultra. Never Stop Dancing followed on 26 November 2021. Streaming-era success showed up in the DJ Mag Top 100, where he reached No. 42 in 2021, his career high, and was at No. 55 in 2023 and 2024 and No. 57 in 2026, per DJ Mag's own list pages. For how that poll works, see our guide to the 2026 vote.

The venue sizes grew steadily, and we give only those we could source:

  • Belgrade, 4 November 2022. EXIT said the first batch of tickets for his Port of Belgrade show sold out in 12 minutes, and later said about 5,000 fans came. Both figures are the promoter's.
  • 2023, North America. Coachella on two weekends and a headline show at Red Rocks, plus a North American bus tour with labelmates, per Beatportal. He returned to Red Rocks and played the Coachella Sahara stage again in 2025, according to EDMTunes.
  • 2024. He released the album Level One and headlined an open-air party outside the Royal Palace in Brussels on 15 August, with about 10,000 people expected. On 22 September he played the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City; EDMTunes puts the crowd above 18,000, a figure we could not confirm elsewhere.
  • 2025. A Kappa FuturFestival set in Turin on 6 July, pictured above (see our festival page).
  • 2026. His first orchestral show at the Hollywood Bowl on 26 July, with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and Alexandra Palace in London on 19 September, announced as his largest UK headline show.

Why did the model work, and what did critics say?

Three things stand out in the coverage. He made the mask a brand that lets a crowd recognise him from a screen. He treated YouTube films, not club residencies, as the engine of growth. And his label ran as a touring crew, with his own music as the only product on stage. Together this made him unusually independent of the DJ circuit: he plays his own tracks, so his sets are his catalogue. That reading is ours, built on the interviews above, and it is not a claim any outlet makes in those words.

We looked for sustained press criticism of him as too commercial or not techno and found none we could attribute; the closest is Attack's description of his sound as more accessible. We did not find reliable Spotify or Beatport chart figures either, so we do not give streaming numbers.

What about Russia and Kazakhstan?

Brejcha's Russian dates in our sources are from 2022: a Moscow show on 15 January 2022 with Ann Clue, and a St Petersburg date on 27 May 2022, both from ticketing listings, which we did not match to reviews. We found no later Russian dates. In 2026 his first shows in Kazakhstan, in Almaty on 12 September and Astana on 13 September, were cancelled on 7 September by the organiser Unisond, which cited circumstances beyond its control; the organiser's own website blamed disappointing ticket sales and rising costs, according to bes.media and newtimes.kz. Neither report ties the cancellation to the artist. For the wider picture of Western acts in Russia see our article on the Russian club scene since 2022.

What we could not confirm

  • The date of the video: most outlets say Saturday 24 October, and one English outlet's report is dated 25 October. We could not open Instagram.
  • The Cercle years and view counts, beyond the figures attributed above.
  • Streaming, Beatport and sell-out figures, including the Red Rocks capacity and the Mexico City crowd.
  • Album numbering: sources count his studio albums differently, so we do not give a number.
  • Whether the 2022 Russian shows went ahead as listed.
  • What he does after 2028.

Several of the English pages we relied on, including DJ Mag, Mixmag and EXIT, blocked our fetcher, so some facts were read from search results or summaries and checked against a second source where we could. If you have first-hand knowledge or a correction, contact us through our about page.
