History

Awakenings started as an Easter techno party, and the timing wasn't incidental: founder Rocco Veenboer named the event after the religious idea of resurrection, then delivered on it in about the least churchy way possible. The first edition landed on March 30, 1997, inside the Gashouder, the domed former gas holder at Amsterdam's Westergasfabriek complex in Westerpark, with Angelo, Billy Nasty, Derrick May, Dimitri, Godard, Nick Rapaccioli and Zen on the bill. Monumental Productions BV, Veenboer's events agency, has run the brand ever since, though ownership changed hands in 2015 when the US promoter SFX (now LiveStyle) acquired it.

The Gashouder's acoustics made it the festival's spiritual home, but Awakenings has never stayed still. When Westergasfabriek closed for renovation in 2000, the party moved to Now & Wow in Rotterdam, then alternated between Now & Wow and Amsterdam's NDSM wharf before returning to a fully restored Gashouder on February 18, 2005. A first edition at Eindhoven's Klokgebouw followed in 2008, and by the 2010s Awakenings was effectively running as two events a year: an Easter weekend gathering at Spaarnwoude, between Amsterdam and Haarlem, and a separate, growing summer festival.

That summer festival found its permanent home in 2022, when Awakenings relocated to Beekse Bergen, the safari park and recreation area in Hilvarenbeek, near Tilburg. The first edition there pulled in around 100,000 visitors across three days, with more than 130 artists spread over roughly a dozen stages, decisively confirming Awakenings' ambition to run one of the biggest dedicated techno festivals on the circuit. The brand's reach now extends well past the Netherlands: ADE showcases have run at the Gashouder since 2012, a first arena show played Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome in 2021, and satellite parties have run in cities including London, New York, Manchester and Antwerp since 2014.

Awakenings' 2027 edition, running July 9 to 11 at Hilvarenbeek, marks the festival's 30th anniversary, three decades after that first Gashouder night. Its booking policy has stayed doggedly techno-first throughout, and its current pull with the genre's biggest names shows in recent programming: Charlotte de Witte's KNTXT imprint has staged full takeovers on Awakenings stages, and Jeff Mills, from Detroit's founding techno generation, was booked to play an Awakenings show at Amsterdam's SugarFactory during ADE's 30th-anniversary edition in October 2026.
