History
Dockyard Festival started in October 2014 as a one-day techno event timed to Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), staged in three tents at NDSM Werf, the former shipyard on the north bank of the IJ in Amsterdam-Noord. The founders, a couple named Coen van Dongen and Tania Davison, have said they first applied for a licence for 10,000 people and settled on 5,000. The first edition sold out two weeks ahead, which they took as proof the concept worked. The idea was simple and, for ADE at the time, unusual: a festival that runs in daylight and early evening rather than the usual all-night club model, outside the summer season. DGTL holds its Amsterdam edition in the same NDSM docklands.
The booking leaned hard on the harder, more industrial end of techno from the start. The announced bill for the 2015 edition, the second, included RPR Soundsystem, Paco Osuna, DJ Rush, Monika Kruse and Surgeon across five stages at NDSM Werf. In 2016 Dockyard added a separate Warehouse Festival at Hembrugterrein, a former Ministry of Defence industrial site just outside the city, held on 9 April with a lineup that included Dubfire, Rhadoo, Sonja Moonear, Tommy Four Seven, Surgeon and Nastia. A second Warehouse edition followed on 6 May 2017, announced with Art Department and Luciano at the top. The team then paused that format while Hembrugterrein was still being developed and put its energy into the autumn ADE edition.
That edition has been held at Havenpark, near Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, in recent years. The official site documents Havenpark editions in 2024 and 2025, and the 2025 one sold out. In 2024 Dockyard marked ten years with a one-off Dockyard Warehouse Festival at Hembrugterrein on 19 October, run alongside the Havenpark day. The format now pairs Dockyard with Mystic Garden Festival, a lighter, trance and uplifting-leaning counterpart, so a single ticket covers both. The 2026 edition runs on 24 October with stage hosts HILOMATIK, Dax J presenting Empyrean, Mystic Garden and HE.SHE.THEY., plus Oscar Mulero and Planetary Assault Systems (live) on the lineup.
