Swiss-Chilean DJ Luciano, born Lucien Nicolet, runs Cadenza and earned DJ Mag's Outstanding Contribution award at the 2026 Top 100 DJs.

Tech HouseMinimal TechnoHouse

Luciano plays like someone who has never been in a hurry: long, warm, percussive sets that move between house and techno without announcing the change, shaped as much by Latin American rhythm as by Berlin minimalism. On 6 October 2026 DJ Mag gave that patience an award, naming him winner of its Outstanding Contribution honour as the Top 100 DJs results were revealed at [UNVRS] Ibiza.

From Vaud to Santiago

Luciano was born Lucien Nicolet in Montcherand, in the Swiss canton of Vaud, to a Swiss father and a Chilean mother, and Wikipedia gives his birth date as 24 February 1978. His father repaired jukeboxes and kept a large record collection at home. After his parents divorced, he moved with his mother and sister to Santiago, Chile, around the age of eleven or twelve (sources differ slightly). In a 2023 interview with 909originals he recalled discovering punk at a French school in Chile through bands such as Bérurier Noir, whose use of drum machines pointed him towards electronic music.

According to Wikipedia he began DJing at 16 and producing in 1997. He later settled in Berlin, where a DJ Mag profile says Ricardo Villalobos invited him to join the city's scene. DJ Mag's recent feature says his marathon sets at Club der Visionaere and Panorama Bar became the stuff of legend, and a 2007 DJ Mag profile placed a Cadenza residency at Panorama Bar in its third year.

Cadenza

Cadenza began as a workaround. Luciano and fellow Swiss producer Philippe Quenum wrote "Orange Mistake" in Luciano's studio, and when labels passed on it they started their own imprint to release it. The first release, "Orange Mistake", appeared in 2003 according to Deejay.de and 909originals, although Wikipedia dates the label's founding to 2002. The name is the Spanish word for cadence, and Luciano's sister designed the logo and first sleeve.

The label became a prominent outlet of the minimal and tech-house era, with Villalobos and Loco Dice among its early artists, according to Beatportal. Luciano later paused signing new artists for close to eight years, then relaunched Cadenza, and the label marked its 20th anniversary in 2024, with plans for an anniversary book, as noted in the 909originals interview.

Ibiza Years

Ibiza has been the other pillar of his career. Luciano joined the Cocoon family on the island in 2001 and played its Monday nights at Amnesia until about 2006, per Wikipedia. RTS.FM's history of Cocoon covers how that party grew, and the label's founder Sven Väth has its own profile. After Amnesia he moved to Circoloco at DC-10, and later ran his Vagabundos party at Pacha. Resident Advisor listed him on the bill for Circoloco's Week 7 at DC-10 on 8 June 2026, so the connection continues.

Sound and Recordings

His sound has moved from the pared-back minimal of the Cadenza years to a broader mix of house and techno. His albums are Blind Behaviour (2004, released as Lucien-N-Luciano), No Model No Tool (2007) and Tribute to the Sun (2009), according to Wikipedia. In 2009 he also launched Aether Live, a multi-DJ show with visuals. At the Ibiza DJ Awards he took Best Tech House DJ in 2011, 2013 and 2014, and shared the category in 2015.

Outstanding Contribution, 2026

DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs 2026 results were announced at [UNVRS] Ibiza on 6 October 2026, and Luciano received Outstanding Contribution, an industry-voted prize separate from the public ranking that put David Guetta at number one. DJ Mag describes him as a force in house and techno for more than 25 years and quotes him on what the dancefloor still gives him.
