Anthony Child records as Surgeon: Birmingham techno, a Tresor residency, his own Dynamic Tension label and British Murder Boys with Regis.

TechnoIndustrial Techno

Anthony Child has spent more than three decades making techno that sounds like machinery thinking out loud: hard, but never merely loud, with a dub-heavy sense of space and a habit of dropping the expected kick and snare pattern when a room is ready for something stranger. He records and performs as Surgeon, and his career runs from the early nineties in Birmingham through a long residency at Berlin's Tresor to a present built around improvised modular sets.

Birmingham Origins

Child was born on 1 May 1971 and grew up in Kislingbury, Northamptonshire. In 1989 he moved to Birmingham to study audio-visual design, played in a jazz and fusion band called Blim, and learned to DJ from a friend, Paul Damage. According to Wikipedia, Birmingham had no techno club at the time, so he and friends started their own night, House of God, where he became a regular DJ in the early nineties. The Quietus described him in 2013 as a long-running DJ at the night, which had just marked its 20th anniversary.

His first record was an eponymous EP on Downwards in 1994, the Birmingham label run by his contemporary Karl O'Connor, who records as Regis. The Quietus characterises his early productions as a mix of minimalist second-wave Detroit techno with British industrial and rave music. A 2025 Superbooth artist listing says he lives in Birmingham.

Tresor and the Late Nineties Albums

Child was a resident at Berlin's Tresor in the mid to late nineties, and the club's label released the run of albums that cemented his name: Basictonalvocabulary (1997), Balance (1998) and Force + Form (1999), sometimes grouped as a trilogy. His album Communications had appeared in 1996. He also built two labels of his own, Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension, which became the home for much of his solo work.

British Murder Boys

Surgeon and Regis formed British Murder Boys in 2002, according to Mixmag, after about eight years of working together. Regis has described the aim as making large slabs of music rather than simple club tracks. Downwards marked their Tokyo live recording with a 12" release. In January 2017 they announced their first UK shows in six years, including a London date at Oval Space on 25 March that year.

Sound, Live Modular and Recent Albums

The sound is the thread that holds the catalogue together. Child's sets lean on groove and hypnosis rather than peaks, and he told The Quietus that each night is a different problem because the room changes. He has also pushed his live work towards modular synthesis. XLR8R profiled his first modular rig and his habit of improvising over the tracks he plays, a 2016 Resident Advisor interview asked why live improvisation had become his main focus, and a Superbooth listing from May 2025 describes live modular performance as a growing part of what he does.

That live emphasis shows in the albums. Breaking the Frame (2011) and Luminosity Device (2018) appeared on Dynamic Tension, From Farthest Known Objects (2016) is a modular techno record, and Crash Recoil (2023) returned him to Tresor with studio versions of material developed for his live shows. Shell~Wave, his second Tresor album in a row, came out on 2 May 2025 with nine tracks and "Soul Fire" as its lead single. Child said he made it to answer what techno means to him, drawing on the echo techniques of 1960s producer Joe Meek and 1970s reggae. His guest appearances have included Munich's BLITZ, which closed in 2026, where Surgeon is among the names in the club's own programming history.

Surgeon in 2026: Bloc and British Murder Boys

British Murder Boys are on the bill for the Bloc 20 Year Reunion at The Cause in London on Saturday 6 March 2027, billed as a live reunion of Surgeon and Regis. Our full story of the festival covers how Bloc went from a Norfolk holiday camp to one-night cult legend. The headliner is Jeff Mills, another artist whose industrial-leaning techno shaped the same strand of British and Berlin club culture.
