TechnoIndustrial TechnoPost-Dubstep

Blawan makes techno that sounds like machinery coming apart on purpose. Jamie Roberts, the producer behind the name, came out of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, broke through on the post-dubstep label Hessle Audio, and has spent the years since pushing toward harder, stranger, more physical dance music. In October 2025 he released SickElixir, his first album for XL Recordings and by his own account his most personal record to date.

Barnsley, Metal and a Maggot Farm

Blawan is an English DJ and record producer from South Yorkshire, with Barnsley as his origin according to Wikipedia. His birth date is not published, and we do not state an age. In a Mixmag profile he describes a teenage life in Barnsley that did not begin with dance music: he played in death metal and grindcore bands, and from the age of 14 until about 20 he worked at a maggot farm, a job he credits with shaping his sense of isolation and his sound. Clash adds that the West Indian Centre in Leeds introduced him to a wide range of electronic music. Mixmag says his first encounters with dance music were Iration Steppas Sound System in Leeds and a Scuba set at Sub Club in Glasgow in 2005.

The stage name has an unglamorous origin. Wikipedia says it comes from Java Blawan coffee, which he often drank while at university.

Hessle Audio, R&S and the Breakthrough

His first release was Fram on Hessle Audio, the Leeds label that Ben UFO co-founded with Pangaea and Pearson Sound. Release listings put it in 2010. Wikipedia says he then signed to R&S Records, the Belgian imprint whose history sits at the centre of RTS.FM's guide to Belgian techno, and Clash notes early-2010s EPs on Hinge Finger as well as Hessle Audio. The Hessle Audio association mattered: as our Ben UFO profile notes, The Quietus said the label helped break Blawan alongside Joy Orbison.

He became best known for "Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage?" and for a remix of Radiohead's "Bloom" that appeared on the 2011 remix album TKOL RMX 1234567. Wikipedia lists a run of EPs from that period, including Peaches and Bohla in 2011 and His He She & She in 2012, as well as Cursory with The Analogue Cops. He also began a hardware-only project, Karenn, with fellow R&S producer Pariah. Wikipedia credits Blawan as one of the artists spearheading the industrial techno revival and says Surgeon and The Black Dog have praised his music.

Wet Will Always Dry and the Berlin Years

Blawan's own label, Ternesc, released his album Wet Will Always Dry in 2018. Under pseudonyms he put out Walk Type as Kilner and Shy Dancers on Bungalowdorf Beach as Bored Young Adults, both in 2016. According to Mixmag, he moved to Berlin, became a touring DJ and later struggled with addiction and mental health. In 2019, after rehab, he moved to a dairy farm in Mecklenburgische Seenplatte in Germany, where he lived for about two and a half years, through the Covid-19 pandemic.

XL Recordings and SickElixir

The comeback was a run of EPs that Clash cites as the sonic starting point for the album: Woke Up Right Handed in 2021, Dismantled Into Juice in 2023 and BouQ. Mixmag credits the XL Recordings A&R Will Aspden with helping him find his voice again. SickElixir was released on 10 October 2025, according to XL's shop listing and Clash, and runs to 14 tracks. Clash says it was recorded between Berlin, Leeds, Paris and Lisbon and deals with grief, family trauma and major life changes. Mixmag reports that it was written over about two years from more than 100 demos, starting with a track called "Weirdos United" that he made while living alone in Leeds. "NOS" was the prelude single.

The record came with a London launch at Village Underground on 10 October 2025 and an Amsterdam headline show at Parallel on 22 October, according to Clash, and Mixmag says he is touring both as Blawan and with Karenn.

On Stage in 2026

Blawan's festival profile has risen with the album. He was named on the 2026 Movement in Detroit bill, and RTS.FM's report on Movement's 20th anniversary lists him with Carl Cox, Dopplereffekt and Eddie Fowlkes among the acts. He and Pariah have run The Pit, a sunken dancefloor lit by a strobe rig repurposed from football stadium cameras, at Draaimolen since 2023. Mixmag notes that the Karenn stage at Draaimolen hosted JK Flesh, Justin K. Broadrick. Unsound in Kraków also lists him on its 2026 programme, alongside Arca, Diamanda Galás, Donato Dozzy and Tim Hecker.
