Chris Liebing is one of the names most closely tied to the hard, driving end of German techno. Born in Gießen and shaped by Frankfurt's club culture, he built his own label, CLR, into a long-running home for the sound, spent years in the studio with Speedy J and, on 27 March 2026, released Evolver, billed as his first fully solo techno LP for CLR.
Gießen, Frankfurt and the Early Labels
Liebing was born on 11 December 1968 in Gießen, Hesse, in what was then West Germany, according to English and German Wikipedia. He became active in Frankfurt's dance music scene in the early 1990s. English Wikipedia says that in 1994 he opened the Spinclub techno club and worked at Eye Q Records in Frankfurt, and German Wikipedia adds that he played regularly at Omen in Frankfurt until the club closed in 1998. RTS.FM's history of Cocoon Recordings lists him among the DJs who played Omen across its ten-year run, alongside Jeff Mills and Carl Cox, a room opened in 1988 by Sven Väth and partners.
He also ran the party series "Es ist Freitag Aaaaabend" at U60311 in Frankfurt and co-hosted the Hr XXL radio show Pitchcontrol with Pauli Steinbach from 2000 to 2003, according to German Wikipedia. His first label, Fine Audio Recordings, dates to 1996. Three years later, in 1999, he founded CLR, the imprint he is best known for.
CLR, Schranz and the Albums
Liebing is regularly named among the DJs of the German harder-techno lineage that peaked around the turn of the millennium. German Wikipedia credits him with substantially shaping the scene term "Schranz", and our report on the American hard techno boom places him in that lineage, alongside Time Warp programming. He has played major German dance events including Loveparade, Mayday and Nature One, per German Wikipedia.
His album catalogue starts with Early Works (2002), followed by Evolution in 2003, a philosophy-themed record that took two years to make and that CMJ New Music Report called "a techno album to go to war with." In 2005 he teamed up with Speedy J for Collabs 3000: Metalism on Novamute, a duo that German Wikipedia says still performs together regularly, and released the mix album Live in Beograd. The label turned ten in 2010 with the compilation 10 Years CLR.
In 2009 he launched the CLR Podcast, which ran weekly until its 315th and final episode in 2015. It was replaced by AM/FM, a show of his own mixes and live recordings. Guests on the podcast included Martin Gore of Depeche Mode, per Wikipedia.
Burn Slow and the Mute Years
In 2018 Liebing released Burn Slow on Mute Records, his first album in eight years, with vocals from Gary Numan and Polly Scattergood. Another Day followed on Mute in 2021 and Another Night in 2022. In 2023 he remixed Depeche Mode's "Ghosts Again" and in November of that year released the EP I Will Be A Devil Until I Am An Angel with Nicole Moudaber on CLR.
Evolver and 2026
Evolver is a 13-track record on CLR, issued as a double 12-inch and digitally on 27 March 2026. According to its Bandcamp page, Liebing wrote and produced it at Studio 23 in Le Châble, Switzerland, and mastered it at South Park Studio in downtown Los Angeles. The credits list collaborators including Luke Slater, Charlotte de Witte, Speedy J, The Advent, Terence Fixmer, Pascal Gabriel and Daniel Miller, with photography by Anton Corbijn and artwork by Studio Bergfors. The track list includes "Unfold", "Roy Batty", "Double Split" and "Eye C".
"Eye C" is still generating releases. A Josh Wink remix, CLR144, came out on 25 September 2026, according to Liebing's own site, after he had been playing it in his sets for months.
On the Road in Autumn 2026
His website's news feed shows a busy autumn. In late September he thanked Warsaw and Lisbon after shows that included a back-to-back with Luke Slater, and in early October he performed at KRAN in Belgrade, a city he has long associated with his Live in Beograd compilation, which he recorded in an old Belgrade theatre in 2005. On Saturday 24 October he was set for a sold-out back-to-back with Len Faki at 909 Festival x Loveland NL in Amsterdam, with a cover-signing session at the What Is Happening There Gallery the day before.
Sound
Liebing's sound is hard, driving techno built on four-to-the-floor structure and heavy, distorted kicks, which is why his name appears so often in discussions of schranz. Over time his output has widened to include vocal-led albums for Mute, and Evolver pulls in long-time peers such as Luke Slater and Speedy J. His booking history reaches into some of Europe's most respected rooms; RTS.FM's report on the closure of Munich's BLITZ lists him among the guests the club hosted.
