Speedy J is one of the few Dutch techno producers whose career spans the first wave of the music and the present day without any real break. Jochem Paap broke through in the early 1990s with a hard, minimal track called "Pullover", moved quickly into the cerebral end of the Warp catalogue, then spent three decades flipping between abstract electronica and club-ready techno. His own label, Electric Deluxe, and a run of collaborations with the likes of Chris Liebing have kept him current well into his fifties.
Early Life and Path Into Music
Jochem George Paap was born on 14 February 1969 in Rotterdam, according to English Wikipedia and its Dutch counterpart, and he is still based there. The Dutch article says he started as a DJ and producer in the late 1980s, buying second-hand equipment and experimenting, and became fascinated by American techno, phoning labels to get new records. The stage name, it adds, came from his fast mixing; since DJ Jochem sounded poor, Speedy J was suggested.
A phone call to John Acquaviva in 1990 led to a deal with Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 label, as the Dutch article tells it. His breakthrough was "Pullover", a hard, stripped-down track that English Wikipedia dates to 1992, although the Dutch article gives 1991, and which the Dutch article says grew into a Dutch top 40 hit.
Sound and Style
Paap's catalogue has never stayed in one place. His debut album Ginger (1993) was released on Plus 8 in Canada and, in the UK, as part of Warp Records' Artificial Intelligence series, the listening-music line that also launched Aphex Twin and Autechre. German Wikipedia describes Ginger as a bridge between ambient and techno, blending spacious, minimal sounds with danceable rhythms. G-Spot followed on Warp in 1995.
The tone changed after that. Public Energy No.1 (1997), released through NovaMute, was a clear break: Wikipedia quotes a 1998 review in the Australian magazine Inpress describing it as an iconoclastic electro record closer to Autechre, Aphex Twin and Mike Paradinas than to Speedy J's earlier work. He continued in that vein with A Shocking Hobby (2000), then returned to four-to-the-floor techno with Loudboxer (2002), whose CD version is a continuous mix of 15 tracks while the vinyl carries 200 locked grooves. Armin van Buuren, in his MasterClass dance music course, cited Ginger as a major early influence, per English Wikipedia.
Labels and Releases
Paap has run his own labels. English Wikipedia credits him with Beam Me Up!, which released his 1995 live album !ive, and with Electric Deluxe, which he started in 2008 and which has also released Terence Fixmer, Gary Beck and Tommy Four Seven. German Wikipedia gives the same 2008 date for Electric Deluxe, while the Dutch article places it a year earlier, so we treat 2008 as the likelier figure.
Collaboration is a theme. With Mike Paradinas he made Slag Boom Van Loon for Planet Mu, and in 1999 he released two ambient albums on the FAX +49-69/450464 label under his real name. The Collabs series of 12-inch EPs paired him with Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing and George Issakidis among others; with Liebing he toured, and the pair released the album Collabs 3000: Metalism on NovaMute in November 2005. In 2013 he and Luca Mortellaro released an album as Zeitgeber on Stroboscopic Artefacts.
Career Highlights
In March 2024 Speedy J announced an album with Surgeon as Multiples, titled Two Hours Or Something, which came out on 17 May 2024, per Wikipedia. German Wikipedia lists a new solo album, Walkman, on the label Stoor in 2026. His official site lists autumn 2026 dates in Berlin, Amsterdam, Athens, Deventer, Ghent and Monterrey, including appearances during Amsterdam Dance Event. Berlin remains a regular stop; for background on the club hosting his September show, see our Berghain explainer and our guide to the best Berlin clubs.
