TechnoElectroElectronica

Dave Clarke is one of the few DJs to have made his name as a techno producer, a radio presenter and a defiantly alternative voice at the same time. Born in Brighton and based in Amsterdam, he came up through the early 1990s European techno scene, made the Red EP series, and has hosted the weekly radio show White Noise since 2006. BBC presenter John Peel is credited, via Wikipedia, with naming him "The Baron of Techno".

Early Life and Path Into Music

According to Wikipedia and Discogs, David Maurice Clarke was born in Brighton, East Sussex, on 19 September 1968. Wikipedia says he was educated at Brighton College and left home at 16, with early musical tastes running to hip hop and post-punk, and The Damned as an influence. He worked in a shoe shop while building a DJ career, and Wikipedia reports that his first residency was at the Brighton club Toppers, which he later called an apprenticeship. Discogs says he started as a hip-hop DJ in the mid-1980s before moving to acid house and then rave. He also wrote record reviews for the DMC Update magazine, including the first Aphex Twin single, according to the Wikipedia entry.

The Red Series and Archive One

Clarke's recording career began in 1990 with a release as Hardcore on XL Recordings, per Wikipedia, which says that the release caught the attention of Belgium's R&S Records, where he put out EPs in 1991 as Hardcore and Directional Force. In 1992 he started his own label, Magnetic North, releasing records as Fly By Wire. The Red EP series followed in the mid-1990s and, Wikipedia says, brought him a significant level of attention, along with remix work for Kevin Saunderson's Inner City, The Chemical Brothers, New Order and Underworld. Robert Hood later remixed Clarke's "Wisdom to the Wise / Red 2" for Deconstruction, according to the Wikipedia discography for Hood.

His debut album, Archive One (1996), came out on Deconstruction and mixed breakbeat and electronica elements into the techno template. Wikipedia reports it reached No. 36 on the UK albums chart, and that Peel named it 14th in a list of his top 20 albums in 1997. In an Electronic Groove interview in 2024, Clarke marked the 30th anniversary of the Red series and Archive One with a remastered six-vinyl box set, saying the reissue was delayed until he regained his rights.

Radio and White Noise

Clarke has always treated radio as part of the job. Discogs says he began presenting in 2000 on Belgium's Studio Brussels, hosting a show called Technology that promoted new techno and electro artists, and that White Noise started in September 2006 on the Dutch broadcaster 3FM. Wikipedia reports that by July 2021 the show had run for 810 editions and had moved to Ireland's RTE 2fm, and that Clarke called it his way of paying back the scene. In the 2024 interview, he is described as hosting two shows: White Noise, then running non-stop for almost 16 years and featuring electro and post-techno, often from unsigned artists, and the fortnightly Saga Series on 2fm, which covers alternative, post-punk and new wave.

Sound and Style

Clarke has said in interviews quoted on Wikipedia that he sees his music as alternative rather than dance music, with techno and electro on its peripheries. His World Service mix albums, released on React Records in the early 2000s, reflect that range, mixing electro and techno. Wikipedia says World Service Vol. 1 was ranked ninth in Resident Advisor's poll of the best mix albums of 2000 to 2009. In the 2024 interview he is critical of what he sees as pre-recorded sets and attention-seeking on social media, a position consistent with his history of playing live and unprepared sets, a habit Wikipedia attributes to a June 2014 interview.

Amsterdam and the Festival Circuit

Wikipedia reports that Clarke moved to Amsterdam in 2008, and Discogs lists him as Amsterdam-based. Since moving he has run the Dave Clarke Presents night at Amsterdam Dance Event, and Wikipedia says he hosted stages at Tomorrowland in 2012 and 2013 and was set to curate one in 2014. The same entry lists appearances at Awakenings, Nature One, Glastonbury and Pukkelpop, and club residencies and appearances as of 2013 at Fabric, Berghain and Fuse.
