Dutch producer Spekki Webu turned a teenage gabber and jungle obsession into Mirror Zone, then opened a new Brooklyn label with Bootstrap Paradox.
Most producers describe their sound in terms of genre. Chris Scholz, who records as Spekki Webu, tends to describe his in terms of refusal: "I don't really care if I'm confusing people," he told DJ Mag. "I think the power with my music is that people can't really get a grip on what it is... I just want to let it speak." That resistance to being pinned down runs from his teenage record collection straight through to Bootstrap Paradox, the album that launched a new Brooklyn label in the summer of 2026.
A Cassette on the Way to Hamburg
Scholz grew up in Delft, in the Netherlands, and traces his musical identity to a specific afternoon at 14: a jungle mix on cassette, played on a trip to visit family near Hamburg. He bought his first record soon after at Plexus 't Platenmanneke, a Delft record shop, and by 15 he was at his first rave, drawn specifically to the darker, stripped-back "crossbreed" strand of gabber associated with Hellfish & Producer, Deathchant, and Enzyme Records. "This branch of gabber music was really the blueprint of what I was into," he said. "It hurts my heart a little bit when I see all this bullshit online about what people think gabber is when I know it's so much more."
From Edits to Mirror Zone
He started DJing around 2013 to 2015 with longtime partner Woody92, made early edits alongside his brother Gino, who produces as JEANS, and only "surrendered" to production properly in 2019, by his own account. Mirror Zone, the label he founded in 2018, opened with a reissue of a near-forgotten 1994 tribal house track, "Beneath A Different Sun" by Memphis, and has since built a catalogue running from Vector Trancer to Malasod, plus the sub-labels Optic Portal and cycle.bender. Scholz has said the label's roster is personal rather than curatorial in the ordinary sense: "Everybody on the label is there because they came on my path for a certain reason."
Not Just a DJ
His own recorded output arrived later than his reputation as a selector: the debut EP, Euclidean Doorway, came out on the Seoul label Beyond The Bridge in 2023, followed by Neural Network in 2025, his debut album for the same imprint. Scholz has pushed back publicly against being defined as a DJ at all. "I saw myself as only a DJ for a long time," he said, "but Jane Fitz said to me a while ago, 'You're not a DJ. You're a multidisciplinary artist.'" That wider practice includes AV and installation work alongside the club records.
Bootstrap Paradox and a New Label's First Release
Bootstrap Paradox, released June 5, 2026, is both Scholz's own sophomore album and catalogue number one for Outer Orbit Records, a new label from New York's Mizz Softee club night. The record moves across techno, trip-hop, and ambient, and closes with a remix from Cari Lekebusch, whose 2000s album The Architect Scholz has cited as a private, long-held reference point. "I've always carried that album close to my heart," he told DJ Mag, describing studio sessions with Lekebusch in The Hague ahead of the remix. Resident Advisor called the record "a trippy, alien album that speaks directly to rave culture's foundational spirit," noting that less than half of it sticks to a conventional 4/4 rhythm.
