Garage HouseUK GarageSpeed Garage

Todd Edwards makes records that sound as though a thousand tiny voices have been persuaded into a single hook. The New Jersey producer built the sample-collage style that fed straight into UK garage, then co-wrote and sang on two Daft Punk songs. In autumn 2026 he was in the news for a different reason: an interview in which he said he now samples material he generates with the AI tool Suno.

Bloomfield, New Jersey

Todd Edward Imperatrice was born on 9 December 1972 in Bloomfield, New Jersey, according to English Wikipedia and the MusicBrainz database. Wikipedia describes a childhood shaped by science fiction, his older sister's disco records and a first purchase of Peter Brown's "Dance With Me". He began producing in 1992, and the approach he developed, which Wikipedia says was inspired by the producer Marc "MK" Kinchen, rests on vocal reconstruction: chopping, layering and rearranging vocal fragments into complex collages over four-on-the-floor beats.

Nervous, "Alabama Blues" and the Garage Connection

In the 1990s Edwards produced mainly for New York's Nervous Records, working under aliases that included The Messenger and The Sample Choir. Wikipedia credits his 1993 single "Guide My Soul" with helping pioneer speed garage, and his 1994 single "Saved My Life" became a club hit in the UK. His breakthrough came in 1995, when the French producer St Germain asked him to remix "Alabama Blues"; his two remixes of the track are among his most famous works and were later included in Pitchfork's list of the best house tracks of the 1990s.

The Wire's Simon Reynolds, quoted on Wikipedia, described his style as cross-hatching brief snatches of vocals into a melodic-percussive honeycomb. That technique became an early signature of speed garage and later two-step garage, and Edwards is credited with playing a role in the creation of UK garage. The Guardian's list of the best UK garage tracks, Wikipedia notes, ranks his St Germain remix at number 16.

His reputation in the UK also has a cult element. On 1 January 2003 the DJ EZ booked him to play at the club Time & Envy in Romford, England, during one of EZ's 4by4 sets, and footage of the night has circulated online ever since, according to Wikipedia and a DJ Mag note it cites.

Daft Punk: "Face to Face" and "Fragments of Time"

In the late 1990s Daft Punk tried to work with Edwards on Homework, but that did not happen; they acknowledged him on the album's "Teachers" instead. In 1999 the connection resumed, and Edwards co-produced and sang on "Face to Face", which appeared on Discovery (2001), became a promotional single two years later and reached number one on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart in 2004.

Then came a long silence. After "Face to Face", Edwards has said he burned out, left the scene and took a job in customer service at Verizon. At the height of the Great Recession he quit that job and decided to return to music. After he emailed Thomas Bangalter to congratulate Daft Punk on their Tron: Legacy soundtrack, Bangalter replied by asking to work together again. The result was "Fragments of Time", co-written by Edwards for Random Access Memories (2013), which won Album of the Year at the 2014 Grammy Awards. He moved to Los Angeles in 2013. In March 2023 the album's tenth-anniversary edition added "The Writing of Fragments of Time", an eight-minute recording of studio conversations and sung improvisations between Bangalter and Edwards.

Defected and the Back Catalogue

Edwards did not own his catalogue when he returned, and Wikipedia says that Daft Punk's manager and EZ urged him to buy it back. In April 2020 the London label Defected Records announced that it had acquired the catalogue, much of which had been available only on vinyl and CD, and in May 2021 the back catalogue was announced for digital release for the first time, with remasters, remixes and unreleased material. Wikipedia also lists his 2019 single "You're Sorry" as a number one on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart.

The Sound: Cut-Up Vocals, Swing and Speed

Edwards' sound is defined by swing beats and vocal fragments cut small and reassembled into new lyrics and melodies, and it has influenced a wide circle. MusicRadar, cited in RTS.FM's Todd Edwards AI sampling article, credits him as an influence on acts from Burial to Disclosure. His early records took cues from producers such as Todd Terry, Masters at Work and MK. His studio albums are Prima Edizione (1999), the Full On series (2001, 2003 and 2007) and Odyssey (2006), according to Wikipedia's discography.

2026: The Suno Interview

In an interview published by MusicRadar on 29 September 2026, Edwards said he now uses Suno Studio to generate material that he then chops and samples, and described the industry's attitude to AI as hypocritical. As RTS.FM's report on the interview sets out, he told MusicRadar he had felt he was going through the motions at the start of 2025, and that generating his own raw material for sampling reignited his interest. He argues it is no different from building with loop packs and that uncleared sampling is already common. He also says he could lose his sampler and still make house and garage.

The conversation sits within a wider argument about AI in dance music. RTS.FM's coverage of Bandcamp's AI ban six months on, AI stem separation for DJs and Charlotte de Witte's Azadi EP and its AI vocalist draw the lines differently: Edwards uses AI as a raw material for his own cut-ups, while Bandcamp targets music generated wholly or substantially by AI. Legal questions remain open, and nothing here is legal advice.
