From Sendak's Drum Kit to Zurich's Clubs

Winkler grew up on his parents' record collection, drawn early to Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane and Frank Zappa before picking up drumsticks to play along. That grounding in live rhythm led him into Sendak, a Swiss hip-hop group he drummed for between 1994 and 1998, recording an EP and two albums and touring Switzerland before the band wound down. Rather than starting another band, Winkler turned toward electronic music, teaching himself production and stepping into Zurich's club scene as a DJ under the name Kalabrese.

Minimal House, Then Something Stranger

His debut solo release, "Airolo," came out on the Zurich label Stattmusik in 2000, filed under straightforward minimal house. The real signal of where his sound was heading arrived with "Chicken Fried Rice" in 2004, released on Perlon, the Berlin label that had become a byword for skeletal, dub-inflected minimal house. Kalabrese's spoken-sung vocal delivery, a style he leaned into more with each release, gave his tracks a personality that set them apart from Perlon's more austere catalogue, and 2005's "Auf dem Hof" became an underground club hit that carried his name beyond Switzerland.

That evolution crystallized on his 2007 debut album, "Rumpelzirkus," a record that folded minimal house, funk, folk and live instrumentation into a genuinely unusual whole and picked up critical attention well past the Swiss scene it came from. He followed it with "Independent Dancer" in 2013, and, during the pandemic years, the two-part "Let Love Rumpel" in 2021 and 2022. On stage, Kalabrese tours with Rumpelorchester, a live band built around keyboards, trombone and his own percussion, that has taken him to festivals including Sónar in Barcelona and Mutek in Montreal.

Zukunft and Zurich's Scene

Since 2005, Kalabrese has been a co-owner of Zukunft, the Zurich club that has become one of the city's defining electronic music venues, and his fingerprints are on its booking and its identity as much as on any of his own releases. He also runs Rumpelmusig, a platform he set up in 2013 for releasing more unconventional dance music outside the boundaries of a standard label. Zurich's Pop Credit Award, a city-backed prize recognizing local music, went to Kalabrese in both 1997 and 2007, a decade apart, bookending the drummer-turned-producer's shift from Sendak to solo artist.
