Sapunov is the working name of Sergey Sapunov, a Moscow house DJ whose career runs through the same circle as Sergey Sanches and Anton Kubikov. He plays groove-led, melodic house, he has been on the Russian club circuit since the mid 1990s, and he is a regular name in the RTS.FM archive.
Early Life and Path Into Music
In a 2023 interview with Moskvich Mag, Sapunov says he started learning to DJ around 1995 under Sergey Sanches, who at first would not lend him records. His first public set, played on his own records, came at a birthday party for Sanches in 1996. He lists Luch, Substance and Krysha Mira among the places he has played and says he worked at Luch. By his own account he was part of the team that opened Ptyuch in 1994, though he never got to play there. His first records came from Ivan Illesh, a resident at the club Justo.
Sound and Style
Sapunov describes his taste as groove-driven, melodic and minor-key, shaped by Ninja Tune, Mo' Wax, Depeche Mode and minimalism. In the same interview he is openly critical of the current Bosnian-school style associated with Solomun. He says he is now booked mostly for summer pre-parties and outdoor events, and that he has no plans to leave Moscow.
Labels and Releases
The earliest release Discogs lists for him is The Ancient Future (2000), issued through 20:20 Vision and Only Records. Later mix releases include Live @ Mix on Deus Vox Records (2004), Fashion Only Presents: Dj Sapunov on Fashion Only Records (2006) and Red Club 12 on MacroVision Records and Electroluxe (2007).
A large part of the catalogue comes through collaboration:

- With Kubikov, he released 3fatmen on World Club Music (2006) and Nu:Gravity (2007), and appears on the Solyanka compilations, including Solyanka 2007 and Solyanka 2009.
- Sapurra is his house alias, listed on Discogs and named in the interview. The same interview mentions a second project, Trevozhny Tip Lichnosti, with a darker, more alternative sound.
As Sapurra, Discogs lists 14 main releases between 2015 and 2026, beginning with Cheese No More on Pro-tez Records (2015). In 2019 he shared the Paperman EP with Defaultman on Poker Flat Recordings, and later releases include Never Been To Detroit on MixCult (2022), which Genning remixed, and Half Dead EP on Muted Noise (2026).
