Scottish producer Vince Watson has made soulful, Detroit-minded techno since 1995, with releases on Rotation, Delsin, Planet E and Awesome Soundwave.

Vince Watson first appeared on stage at four years old, alongside his father, a folk musician, and he has been playing music in public in one form or another ever since. The Glasgow-born producer, now based in Amsterdam, is one of techno's more prolific and more melodic figures, a producer who took piano lessons before electronic music took over and who has spent recent years performing live from hardware alone.

Glasgow Beginnings

Watson comes from Glasgow and has lived in Amsterdam for many years. His own account, given in an interview with INN8, is that he began DJing as a schoolboy at local discos and club nights, playing hip-hop and early house, and that he was experimenting with MIDI in his bedroom by the summers of 1988 and 1989. An early biography adds piano lessons at the Royal Academy in Glasgow before electronic and ambient music took over. His first synths, he says, were a Roland SH-101 and a Roland TB-303.

His recording career started in the mid-1990s. Dave Angel signed him in 1995 and released his first EP, "Innovations," on Rotation, according to the same interview. A debut album, "Biologique," followed in 1999, and "Moments in Time" arrived on the New York label Ibadan in 2002.

Delsin, Planet E and Cocoon

Watson's catalogue now runs to well over 250 EPs by his own count, spread across a long list of labels. In 2006 Resident Advisor reported that the Amsterdam label Delsin had signed him for a full-length, "The eMotion Sequence"; the record was reviewed as out in January 2007, and sources differ slightly on whether it appeared at the end of 2006 or the start of 2007. Igloo Magazine called it one of Delsin's finest releases.

Other labels on his CV include Yoruba, Osunlade's house label, Poker Flat, Mobilee, Transmat and Cocoon, where he released the single "Speaker Freaker" around the time of his 20-years compilation "VW20: Introspection" (profiles date it to 2016 or 2017). He has also described a stretch of roughly 18 months in which he stopped making music after labels moved away from his sound, and has credited "It's Not Over," which Planet E released and which also appears on the label's "Planet E 30" compilation, with bringing him back to it. In 2018, at Derrick May's request, he reconstructed two May tracks for Transmat.

Albums and Side Projects

Watson has been a heavy album-maker. "Every Soul Needs a Guide" came out in 2012, and "Serene," on Rekids, followed the same year. In 2019 he released "DnA," an 18-track album built around Detroit techno, later remixed by artists including Carl Craig and Steve Rachmad. Other projects include "Hope," a 2020 album made for The Outlaw Oceans, a reporting project by journalist Ian Urbina; a downtempo alias, Quart, whose album "Life Is Beautiful" appeared on BBE in early 2020; and the techno alias Amorphic.

His most recent album, "Deep In The Bleep," came out on 31 October 2025 on Awesome Soundwave, the label run by Carl Cox and Christopher Coe. Watson describes it as his 19th full-length and says it grew out of a DC10 set he played for Cox's 60th birthday.

Live Hardware and Teaching

Watson has long positioned himself as a live performer rather than only a DJ. In a recent interview he said he had been hardware-only for several years, with an Akai Force at the centre of the rig sending MIDI to a changing line-up of synthesizers and drum machines, and he named the Novation Peak and Roland TR-8S among them. Several bios describe him as a former resident at Berlin's Tresor and a resident at Amsterdam's 909 Festival.

He has lectured at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam's electronic music school since 2018, now as a senior lecturer teaching DJing, production and remixing, and he has hosted a monthly radio show called Radio Drama, whose guests have included Fred P.

Live at RTS.FM
