Melodic TechnoLive Electronica

Paul Kalkbrenner has spent most of his career refusing to be called a DJ. He performs live: tracks pulled apart into their elements and reassembled on stage. A cult film, a chart-record single and a run of melodic albums took that approach from Berlin youth clubs to open-air arenas, and in October 2025 he returned with his first album in seven years.

Leipzig, Lichtenberg and the First Records

Kalkbrenner was born on 11 June 1977 in Leipzig, according to German Wikipedia and the Deutsche Biographie, and grew up in Berlin-Lichtenberg in the former East. He was 13 when the Wall came down. Alongside his schoolfriend Sascha Funke he began playing records at Berlin youth clubs in the early 1990s, drawn to the Detroit sound of Underground Resistance and to clubs such as E-Werk, Planet and Walfisch. He also learned trumpet and music theory at school. He later worked in television editing to pay for production equipment, and the pair taught themselves to make music on machines they bought and borrowed.

At a BPitch party the two met Ellen Allien, whose label BPitch Control released his first records in 1999 as Paul dB+. The albums Superimpose and Zeit followed in 2001, and Self in 2004 brought a narrative to his melodic style. Kalkbrenner put out six albums and ten EPs on BPitch Control, according to English Wikipedia, before leaving in a friendly split around 2008 to 2010. By then he had decided he wanted to perform only live with his own material.

Berlin Calling

The record that changed everything was the soundtrack to Berlin Calling. The film's director Hannes Stöhr, a long-time supporter, asked Kalkbrenner to score a movie about a Berlin DJ in the 2000s, and then cast him in the lead role as Ickarus, a DJ unravelled by the scene. He moved to Aix-en-Provence in late 2006 for six months with Funke to make the soundtrack. The film opened in October 2008, and English Wikipedia reports a run of more than 145 weeks at Kino Central in Berlin.

"Sky and Sand," featuring the vocals of his brother Fritz Kalkbrenner, became his signature track. German Wikipedia says it spent 107 weeks in the German Top 100, a record at the time, and that the soundtrack was certified platinum for more than 200,000 copies in 2012.

Paul Kalkbrenner Musik, Sony and Back to the Future

After the Berlin Calling breakthrough he launched his own label, Paul Kalkbrenner Musik. Its first album, Icke Wieder, came out on 3 June 2011 and reached No. 2 in Germany, then gold status; Guten Tag followed on 30 November 2012. On 9 November 2014 he was part of the official programme at the Brandenburg Gate for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Wall, per German Wikipedia.

In 2015 he moved to Sony Music, and German Wikipedia reports that he was the first artist given access to the Sony archive. His seventh album, 7, appeared on 7 August 2015 and topped the charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, according to the same source. A video trilogy, the Florian Trilogy, prepared the ground, and in July 2016 the three free Back to the Future mixes revisited the early 1990s techno he grew up hearing in Berlin. English Wikipedia reports more than 1.5 million downloads. A series of Back to the Future shows in smaller venues from April 2017 marked a return to DJing, and Parts of Life followed on 18 May 2018. Singles on B1 Recordings followed from 2019, including "No Goodbye," "Parachute" and "Graf Zahl."

Sound and Live Setup

English Wikipedia describes a melodic sound with an affinity for grand emotional gestures that still obeys the logic of the dancefloor, and says his setup centres on Ableton Live, MIDI controllers, hardware synthesizers and drum machines. Since 2001, it adds, he has used only Ableton for production. RTS.FM's history of Cocoon Recordings says he played formative sets at Frankfurt's Omen club alongside Sven Väth and Ricardo Villalobos. In 2015, Solomun remixed his single "Cloud Rider" for Sony Music.

Festivals and Big Live Shows

Kalkbrenner has headlined festival main stages for years. Sea You Festival in Freiburg lists him among its headliners across its history, and Nature One featured him on its Open Air Floor in 2026. Trommel reported that he opened the first Sophie Festival in Spain in 2022. During the 2024 Ibiza season he appeared as a guest of Joseph Capriati's Metamorfosi party.

For Amsterdam Dance Event's 30th edition, our ADE 2026 wrap-up notes that his Loveland show appeared on ADE's list of anniversary-week shows, alongside Skepta, Scooter and David Guetta. The festival's 30th anniversary preview has more on the programme.

The Essence and 2026 to 2027

On 25 July 2025, Beatportal reported that Kalkbrenner's album The Essence would be released on 10 October via Sony Music, led by the single "Ninety - Two." Electronic Groove described the single as built on a 130 BPM groove, imagining how the sound of 1992 might have evolved without interruption. Of the album, his first since Parts of Life, he said "I had basically moved on from making albums." The record was released in October 2025.

Concert listings show that live work did not slow down. A Paul Kalkbrenner Open Air was billed for Münster's Schlossplatz on 2 August 2026, and his Loveland show was part of ADE week. Berlin.de lists an open-air concert at the Parkbühne Wuhlheide for Saturday, 26 June 2027, with tickets from 85.25 euros.
