Tripmastaz is the working name of Andrew Guyvoronsky (Andrey Gaivoronsky in Russian transliteration), a house producer and DJ who went from a provincial Ural city to St. Petersburg and then to the international circuit. He built a catalogue that runs from jacking Chicago-style house to a long-running partnership with DJ Sneak, and he has played RTS.FM sessions in St. Petersburg since 2009.
Early Life and Path Into Music
In an interview with Sobaka.ru he says he was born and raised in Chelyabinsk, in the Urals, and later spent about ten years living in St. Petersburg. He began writing music in 1996 and started DJing in 1999, and says he came to electronic music from hip-hop, with a group called Zona Vetrov. He describes his DJ sets as rooted in hip-hop and American house. He also says he had no formal music training, and that getting good records in a provincial city in the 1990s was difficult.
Sound and Style
Sobaka.ru describes him as turning out variations on house at industrial volume, and the records back that up: Discogs lists more than 200 credits since his first EP in 2007, ranging from deep, dubby house through to acid-leaning collaborations with DJ Sneak. The Sneak connection is the thread that links his catalogue to the Chicago house tradition. In a 2018 Electronic Groove interview he was described as planning a return to Sunwaves after four years.
Labels and Releases
His label work starts at home. Plant 74, which he told Sobaka.ru is a nod to the Chelyabinsk region code and its factories, is the imprint that carries his own Tripmastaz numbered series. Discogs lists him as the founder of the labels Plant 74 Records, Tripmastaz and Call_lab and the mastering company Tripmastering, and credits him with aliases including Basement Kid, Dre Dilla and Trackmaster Dre.
As an artist he has released on a wide spread of labels. Discogs shows early EPs on Cray1 Digital Works and U-Freqs (2007), Kung Fu Dub Recordings (2009) and Magnetic Recordings (2010), then I'm A House Gangster (2013 and 2014), Cadenza Lab (the 2016 release Blossomz) and Ovum Recordings, where he and DJ Sneak released the Acid EP in 2017 and 2018. In 2024 the pair released 33 Chambers EP on Respect The Craft under the name RareTwo Inc. Sobaka.ru adds that in 2013 he joined the I'm a House Gangster movement, played Studio 80 in Amsterdam and appeared on a compilation for Richie Hawtin's Minus label, and that he is one third of the trio Special Case Event.
Career Highlights
Tripmastaz's Berlin base is stated on his Bandcamp page, and Discogs describes him as a Berlin-based DJ, producer and mastering engineer. A 2018 interview described him as Moscow-based, so his location has shifted over the years. Sobaka.ru reports that DJ Sneak and Luciano play his releases, and names him as one of the performers at Ballantine's x Boiler Room's True Music night in St. Petersburg.
RTS.FM Connection
Tripmastaz appears in 11 videos in the RTS.FM archive. Most are St. Petersburg studio sessions from 2009 to 2011, with two of them billed as live sets, and a later one from 2016 as part of the Dubsundays x RTS.FM series. Sobaka.ru also notes that his friend Eugene Lookash, a Chelyabinsk DJ, has known Sergey Sanches and Anton Kubikov since the early 1990s. Two sets are embedded below.
