TechnoElectroclashHouse

Few German DJs have moved between the underground and the glossy end of pop culture as comfortably as DJ Hell. Born Helmut Josef Geier in a Bavarian village, he started playing records in 1978, helped put Munich on the acid house map, and in 1996 founded International Deejay Gigolos, the label that became a launchpad for electroclash. In December 2025 he returned with a new studio album, Neoclash, on the same imprint.

From Altenmarkt an der Alz to Frankfurt and New York

Hell was born on 6 September 1962 in Altenmarkt an der Alz, Bavaria, according to both the English and German Wikipedia biographies. He began DJing in 1978, landed his first residency at Club Libella in Kirchweidach in 1983, and in 1987 organised what Wikipedia describes as Munich's first acid house party. German Wikipedia adds residencies at Munich's Babalu Club and at Ultraschall.

The early 1990s pulled him into the wider German dance scene. He helped establish Disko B in 1991 with Peter Wacha and worked there as an A&R until 1996, and from 1992 he did A&R for Logic Records in Frankfurt, where he compiled Logic Trance, billed on Wikipedia as the first trance compilation. His own breakthrough record, "My Definition of House Music", came out on R&S in 1992 and, per Wikipedia, sold more than 100,000 copies.

In 1993 he lived in New York and held a residency at the Limelight alongside Jeff Mills. The next year he moved to Berlin and worked at the Hard Wax record shop, and in 1995 he was the only German DJ invited to record a John Peel Session, according to Wikipedia. His debut album, Geteert & Gefedert, arrived on Disko B in 1994.

Gigolo, Electroclash and the Albums

In 1996 Hell founded International Deejay Gigolos in Munich and ran it as label head, A&R and art director. Wikipedia credits the imprint with more than 300 singles and albums between 1996 and 2016, and it is widely associated with the electroclash revival of the early 2000s. Gigolo also made headlines in 1999, when Arnold Schwarzenegger sued over the label's logo. Wikipedia reports that Hell was ordered to stop selling the affected records and pay a fine of 150,000 euros.

His own albums track a restless taste for new wave, Italo disco, techno and pop. Munich Machine (1998) is the record most often linked to the electroclash moment, and NY Muscle (2003) was recorded in New York. Teufelswerk (2009), a double album, became his best-charting release in Germany. Zukunftsmusik (2017) was co-produced with Peter Kruder and, in German Wikipedia's description, pays tribute to gay club culture. In 2003 GQ named him its Man of the Year in the music category.

Away from albums, he is also an in-demand remixer. His remix of Tim Deluxe's "Transformation" topped Beatport's techno chart for nine weeks in 2013, per Wikipedia.

A New Label, a Collaboration and a Museum Role

In 2020 Hell launched The DJ Hell Experience, a label distributed by wordandsound in Hamburg, with the album House Music Box as its first release. German outlet FAZEmag named it album of the year for 2020. In March 2021 he put out Meese x Hell, a collaboration with the artist Jonathan Meese on Buback Records, and the same year he remixed Soft Cell's "Tainted Love". His record collection was part of the Munich City Museum's "Nachts. Clubkultur in München" exhibition, which ran from July 2021 to May 2022.

He has also worked outside clubs. He appeared in the 2022 sequel to the film Pottoriginale as a schlager singer, was named a DFB ambassador for UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany, and is listed by Wikipedia as a curator of the Museum of Modern Electronic Music (MOMEM) in Frankfurt. That museum role is undated on the page, so treat it as a title rather than a timeline entry.

Neoclash and the 2026 Calendar

On 15 December 2025, Mixmag Germany reported that International Deejay Gigolo Records had released Neoclash, a twelve-track studio album with guest appearances from Donner Summer and Joyce Muniz. Digital release came on 12 December 2025, with a limited double vinyl edition in transparent red and crystal clear following on 16 January 2026. Mixmag describes it as a contemporary take on the aesthetics of the electroclash era, mixing Italo disco, new wave, techno, house and electronic pop without leaning on nostalgia.

The back catalogue is getting attention too. Our profile of Frankfurt's Rawax label notes that Rawax remastered Geteert und Gefedert for a new pressing in 2026, and lists a Rawax 15th anniversary party with Hell in Wiesbaden among its anniversary events.

On the festival side, Junction 2 billed him for a back-to-back with Marcel Dettmann on the fabric day of its tenth-anniversary edition on 25 July 2026, a bill that also included Nina Kraviz and Jeff Mills. Our write-up of the Junction 2 x fabric day covers what was announced and what the venues listed.

Sound

Hell's sound resists a single label. At Disko B and Logic he worked in the techno and trance orbit of the early 1990s. At Gigolo the catalogue moved toward the synth-pop-flavoured sound that fed electroclash, and Mixmag's description of Neoclash lists Italo disco, new wave, techno, house and electronic pop side by side. Image is part of the package: Mixmag notes that Neoclash continues his work with fashion, photography and contemporary art.
