EXIT Festival Returns to Serbia: What Was Announced

EXIT will return to Petrovaradin Fortress with a special July 2027 event, ahead of a full return in 2028. What was announced and what is still unknown.

On 29 October 2026 EXIT festival announced that it is coming back to its home at the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia. The plan has two steps: a special one-off gathering at the fortress in July 2027, and the full-scale festival in 2028. The announcement came four days after Serbia's snap parliamentary election, which the student-led Student List won, according to preliminary results, and it follows a year in which EXIT, which left Serbia after its 25th edition in 2025, took its name to Croatia, Montenegro, Malta and Egypt.

This piece sets out what EXIT announced, with its own words and dates, the background, and what is still open. Where we rely on EXIT's own account, for example on pressure from the authorities, we say so, because those claims come from the festival and we did not find a government reply. We read EXIT's announcement, Serbian and international reports, and the festival's earlier statements. DJ Mag and Billboard did not open for us.

The short version: EXIT says the full return was always planned for 2028, because it needs at least 18 months of preparation, and that fan response added the July 2027 event. The theme is freedom, unity and love. There is no lineup, no dates, no ticket information and no word on the format. Headlines that say "2028" and headlines that say "2027" are both right.

What did EXIT announce?

EXIT's announcement on its own site, with an Instagram post, is headlined "Next year at the fortress! EXIT is coming home!". In summary:

  • July 2027: a special gathering at Petrovaradin Fortress. The "EXIT experience" for it, meaning the programme and format, is to be revealed later.
  • 2028: the full-scale return, which EXIT says was the original plan because a festival of its size needs at least 18 months of preparation.
  • Why the extra event: EXIT says it received thousands of emails, messages and comments and heavy media attention showing people did not want to wait until 2028.
  • Theme: freedom, unity and love.
  • Not announced: exact dates, lineup, tickets and prices, or whether it will keep its multi-day, multi-stage format.

Founder and director Dušan Kovačević linked the decision to the election result in the announcement. He recalled hanging banners at the fortress in July 2025 saying that the students were winning and that EXIT would be back next year, when he believed freedom was coming but did not know how soon. He said the pressure on EXIT had only made it more determined, and that the students had shown that no force is stronger than a people determined to live in freedom. In the same text EXIT describes itself as the only major festival that publicly backed the student protests, and says some domestic artists who played its last edition were later put on blacklists. Both are EXIT's claims. We found no reply from the Serbian government in any report we read.

Why did EXIT leave Serbia?

A short timeline of the festival's last two years, with the source for each step:

  • 2000 and 2001. EXIT began in Novi Sad in 2000 as a student movement for democracy and moved to Petrovaradin Fortress in 2001.
  • 1 November 2024. A concrete canopy collapsed at Novi Sad railway station and killed 16 people, which set off student-led protests over corruption and accountability, according to Wikipedia, EDMTunes and Dork.
  • June 2025. EXIT said its 2025 edition would be its last at the fortress, citing financial and political pressure, and said public funding had been withdrawn at every level. Kovačević called it the hardest decision in the festival's 25-year history. Resident Advisor and DJ Mag reported it. The funding claim is EXIT's, and we only saw the provincial authorities' counter-position in a search summary.
  • 10 to 13 July 2025. The 25th-anniversary edition, the last in Serbia, drew about 200,000 people according to organiser-sourced reports.
  • Late October 2025. EXIT announced a Global Tour for 2026, saying that after 25 years at the fortress the festival would spread out to the world, as Pollstar and Resident Advisor reported.
  • 23 May 2026. EXIT said Kovačević's brother Miloš had been arrested in Novi Sad and called it intimidation. We did not find independent Serbian reporting on the charge, so we only note the festival's account. Kovačević referred to his brother's detention in the 29 October announcement.
  • 9 September 2026. Wikipedia records Kovačević saying there was no possibility of a Serbian edition in 2026.

What did EXIT do in 2026?

EXIT says it held eight events in six countries. The ones we could confirm from the official tour page and press reports:

  • Sea Star, Umag, Croatia, 28 to 31 May. The tour's first stop. Boris Brejcha was on the bill, according to EXIT's tour page and a recap we saw in search, and we covered his farewell announcement in our report on his 2028 retirement.
  • Ulcinj, Montenegro, 3 to 6 July, and Budva, 28 to 31 August. EXIT said on 7 September that the two together drew almost 150,000 visitors from more than 100 countries. That is the organiser's figure.
  • Spiral, Malta, 31 July to 2 August. N1 reported a "Students Win" banner displayed in Valletta by a diaspora group.
  • Starlight at the Giza pyramids, Egypt, early October. EXIT's press release names Charlotte de Witte, Adriatique, Michael Bibi and Indira Paganotto and claims more than 40,000 visitors from 114 countries, again an organiser's number. The official page and the release give different dates, so we say only "early October".

Reports of a North Macedonia stop and an Indian edition are not on the official tour page, and we treat them as unconfirmed.

What does the election have to do with it?

Serbia held a snap parliamentary election on 25 October 2026. Euronews reported that the Student List, a movement that grew out of the protests, won and that President Aleksandar Vučić conceded in a brief statement, saying that based on the sample it was clear his side had lost. The figures in that report came from his statement, not from official results: he said the Student List would have between 135 and 140 seats and his own party about 105. The monitoring group Crta, cited by European Western Balkans, put the vote at 51.47 per cent for the Student List against 40.42 per cent for the ruling coalition. The numbers are preliminary, and we do not have final results.

EXIT's own line is that it would return when freedom returned to the country. That is the festival's reading of the vote, and this piece takes no side on the politics. We report that the festival tied its return to the result and that the announcement came four days after it.

What does this mean for festival-goers?

Not much that can be planned yet. There are no dates, lineup or tickets for July 2027 or for 2028. For other fixtures see our guide to the best techno and house festivals of 2027, and for the wider run of cancellations and relocations this year see our festival cancellations tracker. EXIT is not the only festival in flux: the same week Barcelona's Sónar posted a funeral notice for itself, which we cover in our report on the Sónar campaign.

What we could not confirm

  • The July 2027 and 2028 programme: dates, lineup, ticketing, format and venue arrangements. EXIT says details are to come.
  • The government's position. No ruling-party or state response appears in any report we read, and we did not find one.
  • Final election results and any change in the government's attitude to the festival.
  • EXIT's funding and blacklist claims, and the charge in the case of Kovačević's brother, beyond what EXIT itself says.
  • Attendance figures for the 2026 tour, which are all organiser claims.
  • The North Macedonia and India stops.
  • Billboard and DJ Mag coverage, which we could not open.
